Orienteering race (Short Stumble) 2:13:01 intensity: (17 @0) + (1:01 @1) + (12:13 @2) + (1:14:07 @3) + (40:43 @4) + (4:40 @5) *** 9.33 km (14:16 / km) +126m 13:22 / km

Susq. Stumble at Patuxent River Park, short version (nominally 7 km/shortest distance), overcast with temp in upper 30s. Dressed right and kept my feet pretty much dry the whole way. Less scratchy vines than there could have been for QOC terrain. ;-)

The Short Stumble had three windows with 5 or 6 controls in a window that could be visited in any order. You had a choice of 5 controls to start with, after a run across a field and mowed cornfield; most people headed to the control just past the road first (A) then C-B, but I kept more left to visit B first, then A and C, taking a chance that I'd be able to cross the steam downhill from C without getting my feet wet. While I did manage to get across with dry feet I missed on the navigation from A to C getting WAY too far east on the wrong spur before it clicked that I wasn't supposed to be there. At least two other people were also out there.... (Comparing splits with Sandy and Valerie, my mistake cost me about 7-7.5 minutes).

My other non-spike was the last control, where I didn't see the flag when I looked down in the (correct) reentrant and looped around down the spur before coming back to it. At least a three minute mistake (comparing to S&V who went more directly and nailed it).

Order of travel:
Window 1 -- B-A-C-*D-E (*crossed stream on a log)
6 (#120)
Window 2 -- T-R-S-U-Q
12 (#117)
13 (#118)
Window 3 -- L-M-N-O-K-P
20 (#147) (crossed stream S of #13 then went east-northeast to the trail)
21 (#119)

Trails at Jacobsburg SP. Temps in upper 50s felt colder when you went faster, so I tried to spend more time on MTB trails near Sober's Run to keep warm. A few degrees cooler and I'll need more layers!

Had to stop and walk up the steeper hills.

Forgot to mention: watch strap was loose to start (I tightened it partway) so HR max is probably bogus...I don't think it gets that high!
