Assabet River National Wildlife Reserve in Sudbury. We were hoping for a few bird sightings but besides small ones flitting in the forest we only saw turtles sunning on logs in Puffer Pond.

The area used to be used to store munitions and has quite a few bunkers scattered in the woods. One-contour high man-made elongated hills with vertical cliff faces (concrete walls with entry doors on one end) are now harder to see as trees grow on the dirt covering them. Converted to a refuge in ~2003.

Older Dash/Masters Nationals day 2 at Gunstock, 3.1 km, 150m climb

All the climb was on legs 2-3-4-5 with some up and down possible to #6. Then we worked our way downhill.

Big booboo to #4 where I was close but apparently confounded by the mapping of the green and reentrants (as well as distracted by other runners). I didn't go far enough west after having bounced off the top of the sharper bend ESE of the point but searched up and down the hill, eventually finding another control (#59, on a cliff?) before heading back to the trail bend to relocate. Found it fine then but wasted way too much time NOT relocating.

A bit low near 6 and had to climb up to it.

I don't think I lost any time relative to my competition by not following the beeline to 7; I angled NW to go around the stream (crossing where the yellow ski trail goes over the culvert pipe) and then had a nice run down the hill.

Winsplits shows me having the fastest split of F65 to #2. I didn't take the main trail but turned onto the yellow trail until it bent downhill, where I continued out to the E-W trail and followed it until the stream crossing, then up along the W side of the hill.

My mistake at 4 dropped me farther behind my competition to 6th place out of 10 (biggest class in several years). Janet F was consistently fast and won both days, with Linda Kohn and Diana Todd rounding out the top 3. There's always next year.

Masters Nationals day 1 at Gunstock Mountain Resort on what couldn't have been a better day weather-wise. Started out in the mid-upper 40s but 50s and sunny by the time most people finished so great for hanging around and chatting.

Stats: 3.3 km, 95m climb (but everyone with a Garmin track is showing climbs in the 160-180m range...hmmm)

I lost time *leaving* #5, thinking I knew which way to exit the control to head toward #6 but ending up under the chair lift and heading back toward 4 before I figured out my mistake. 6:30 minutes from when I left #5 until I got back on line, so I figure a 5:30 minute error there at the very least.

My "non-spike" was heading from 8-9, I wasn't sure where on the hill I was and entered the woods earlier than needed (and then popped back to the ski slope to continue downhill). The mapped light poles and ski lift poles were very helpful.

I think I had good routes otherwise and mostly kept track of where I was on the hillside, though I hit the big road NW of #4 farther uphill than I intended. I had started out sidehilling but it was too steep so I went up to where the slope was flatter, crossing below the top of a ski lift (the one that heads uphill from the Go control).
