Brown X course, which we shared with the younger men; nominally 3.9 km 130m climb
First 5 (to me) were navigationally easy, maybe too much so for Brown? [Though I did get off line a bit to 1 and took a wider route than maybe necessary to 5.]
Maybe not the cleanest route to 6 (went through more barberry than I probably needed to and probably could have shot straight across the marsh), but then messed up in the circle when I didn't see the flag on the boulder/rock where I expected it to be, then didn't look closely at the control description until after checking other rocky bits close by. I eventually returned to that rocky area, thinking it had to be there, and found the flag tucked down in and partly hidden by an unmapped tree. I heard from others that if you approached it from above the flag was readily visible but from other approaches it was definitely hidden from view. I lost a few minutes there but not as much as some.
On 8 I think the choices were to run on a big trail that took you somewhat wide around a hill, and necessitated a climb at the end, or climb a couple of contours or less to a smaller, more direct trail through the hashed green which came out directly across from the mowed trail through the tall grass (rough open). I chose the second option which was slightly more direct.
Gorgeous weather, low 70s and sunny. Hope it hangs around for tomorrow morning.
