Walking 2:40:51 [1] 3.33 km (48:17 / km) +15m 47:14 / km
slept:6.5 shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

At Craters of the Moon National Park near Arco, Idaho. Our first National Park visit as seniors (I got a National Parks Pass). We went to the cave area and wanted to go to Boy Scout Cave and Beauty Cave, but that area was closed because they were re-tarring the paved walkway over the lava. We had seen/been in Indian Cave before, but that was our only choice in this area. We later went to Buffalo Cave in another area of the park.

Had a great time watching the bluebirds and swallows diving around the cave and collapsed opening areas and in some cases, feeding young birds on their nests. We didn't see any young'uns, but saw where the parents swooped in to feed them. Also saw as many as 6 rock doves near the top of one of the lava tube roof collapses. We explored the typical way first (south?) and then went back down the staircase to look at the other two cave extensions (one with a collapsed roof/pile of boulders at the end and the other without).

Note: at the south end we couldn't go east and west as the track shows (so the distance is pretty bogus); watch was confused when I was underground. At the north end, the last bit looping around the collapsed area was on top, to look for a bird I had seen from below.

No ice seen, but some parts of the caves were a refreshing break from the 93-98F heat. A slight breeze aboveground made it bearable.

Walking 1:16:00 [1] 2.07 km (36:43 / km) +24m 34:42 / km
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

At Craters of the Moon National Park, hiking to and exploring Buffalo Cave (near Broken Top and Big Crater cinder cones), and taking pictures of the wildflowers that have made their home on the lava fields. Amazing place.

Track including driving away from the parking area until I realized my watch was still on. I've adjusted the time and distance (but track still shows us driving away...).

Walking warm up/down (to start) 8:41 [2] 0.44 km (19:55 / km) +15m 17:00 / km
shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

To start, along a path, until you get to a steep hill near the end. Youch.

Orienteering race (middle) 1:01:26 [4] ***** 3.42 km (17:58 / km) +96m 15:45 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Detailed Gold Rush Hills map terrain was fantastic for the Middle. I would have liked fewer steep-steep hill climbs, but finished okay, with only a few bobbles. SL 2.6 km 150m climb advertised. 80s by the time we started, I think.

A decent run for a woods middle, with a few bobbles including <1min at #2, searching for the right reentrant for #6, and a slightly bigger error at 13. Finished about 5-6 minutes behind Diana but ahead of Debbie (and Julie). Fun (but hot... they had plenty of Vitalyte and refreshments, and ice water buckets with sponges which were very welcome today and yesterday).

Walking warm up/down (to start) 22:40 [2] 1.44 km (15:45 / km) +84m 12:12 / km
shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

9 AM

Orienteering race (Br-ultralong) 2:29:52 [4] **** 9.35 km (16:02 / km) +354m 13:28 / km
spiked:9/11c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Temp around 65-70 at start, 90+ after we got back to the car. SL 6.9 km, 350m climb (AP calculated really close to that!). US Ultralong Champs brown course on the Gold Rush Hills map near Idaho City. 1:10000, 5m contours

A 9 minute error at 6, turning the wrong way at the top of the ridge, but otherwise clean albeit walking most of the time. It was nice to jog on the road because it was all downhill. I chose the road over the trail atop the ridge for two reasons -- I expected a smoother running surface, and I had a more gradual descent off the ridge. I was ready to be done at #7 but trudged on in, with a slight bobble at the penultimate control but relatively quick recovery (with the help of Tori B. who also had that control).

Third overall behind Debbie Newell (2:00) and Diana Todd (2:10). I would have been about 10 minutes behind Diana with a clean run, so still 3rd. :-)

Orienteering race (sprint) 28:12 [4] *** 2.96 km (9:31 / km) +1m 9:30 / km
spiked:15/16c shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Gold Rush sprint at Veterans Park and a small bit of Willow Lane Park in Boise. Temps at least in the 80s so kept speed down a bit so I didn't roast too much. Most of the other F60s started after me, and I saw them out on the course as it crossed back and forth on itself, but only Debbie N passed me, near the end. One big (for a sprint) booboo of a about 2:30 where I ran past a control because I thought it was too soon...dumb.

Managed 2nd in F60, though. Natalia decided not to come, and Diana T. had a mis-punch. Julie has hip arthritis, and I forget who the other person was.

About 90 when we left, and got over 100 this afternoon. Earlier start tomorrow and I hope to be done before noon.

SL stats: 2.3 km (on the long side in my view).

Walking (sand) 1:45:00 [2] 4.0 km (26:15 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park in Idaho. Drove from Boise with Glen and also Donna F and decided to hike around the lake at this park, though when we got to the far side the trail wasn't down at lake level but climbed along the side of the dune above the vegetation. That was tough work. We all ended up with a lot of sand in our shoes.

It was 70 overnight in Boise, and just a bit warmer when we left where we're staying, but mid 80s by the time we started our house. And the car thermometer was saying mid 90s by the time we left the park. Preview of the weekend?

Pilates class (weights) 55:00 [1]

She included a flow thing going from down dog to plank to pushup to up dog, repeat. I can do one or two (modified pushup) but right arm/shoulder tires very quickly.
11 AM

Walking (indoor track) 33:47 intensity: (3:39 @1) + (30:08 @3) 2.2 mi (15:21 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

The room with machine seemed even warmer than the hall or track so instead of trying the elliptical again I did two miles on the track (again). 15:00/15:08 plus cool down.

Pulldowns only (10)

Then got to check out the newly refurbished locker room...nice rehab; the showers especially needed an overhaul.
