Note

9:30 am There's a control in the woods visible from our balcony at the lodge. Just saw a runner come through. :-)

Note

10:20 pm -- Some photos, mostly from hikes we did today after the Middle race.
10 AM

Running (paved) warm up/down 2:30 [2] 0.33 km (7:35 / km) +1m 7:28 / km
shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Very short warm-up near the start just to get the legs and brain in gear.

Orienteering race (middle) 47:49 [4] *** 3.54 km (13:31 / km) +133m 11:23 / km

US Middle Championships on the Smokey Bridge and Shangra La map
1:10000, 5m / 3.2 km 140m
upper 30s and partial sun, still some breeze

Yay -- a better run today despite small errors here and there (and at least a minute lost to 4 as I investigated up the ditch rather than across the ditch); AP has me listed with about 4 minutes or so of error.

Watched Natalia out of the start today (forgot to even look yesterday to see if I could see which way Brown runners were going); she started a few minutes ahead of me. Once I turned over my map I turned left too, and ran the trail until almost at the bend (past the weird unknown green blobs on either side of the trail). 3-4 I followed a good line down the hill, I think, but then was distracted by other small depressions near the ditch that weren't mapped, before realizing I had to be on the next spur. A little high on 5 but there were other runners around. I think I caught up to Patty L here, or at 6. Saw her most of the rest of the way around either ahead or behind me; she had made mistakes early, but said my being there pushed her to keep up the pace.

I apparently missed going over the Shangra La arch between 6 and 7 by just a bit (the cave/arch mapping is confusing and hard to read at speed). High on my approach to 11, passing what turned out to be a Green course control in the wide reentrant WSW of the boulder (Tony M on Green made a comment here to the effect I was too high; he had probably come right by my control). The rest was good, chasing Patty and trying to keep up speed. I could NOT run any of the final uphill leg to the finish; just too steep, and my split time shows it.

While looking at results (Mary Jo about 5 minutes ahead) I kept wondering where Natalia was; she finished several minutes later and I found out her tale of woe on #3. Finished 2/10 in F60. :-)

Very nice Middle course capturing the essence of the discipline. Winning times were in the low 30s, so just a slight touch on the long side. Not as much over as the sprints which were about 30% too long, while the Long courses (at least Green and Brown) were a bit short.

Hope this is the end of 30's temps for orienteering for awhile.

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]

After the event we visited Smokey Bridge, an arch area over a cave that we had run across coming into the finish. Mike announced at the results that it was there, so it needed investigation.

Next we took a hike from the lodge down to the Raven Bridge; about an hour loop. Then we drove down to the Welcome Center and hiked under the road through the large, long cave that the other Brown course ran through on their Long courses yesterday. It has a hole in the roof/arch that you can hike to from the trail on the other side.

And finally we hiked a short trail that goes from near the entrance of X Cave to the other end; we could see up to the landing where we exited one side of the cave and re-entered the other. Maybe I'll post some pictures later if I don't fall asleep first.

Running (paved) warm up/down 8:03 [2] 0.94 km (8:33 / km) +13m 8:00 / km
shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Took the bus shuttle from the lodge to start, saving us a longer trip, but then I needed to get warm enough to run so went for a jog around the parking lot near the campground. Got back, took my swearshirt off, and got all my "stuff" on just in time for my callup...good timing.

Orienteering race (long) 1:08:55 [3] *** 5.3 km (13:01 / km) +186m 11:04 / km

US Long Championships at Carter Caves S.R.P. near Olive Hill, KY. We navigated the Bat Cave (!) map :-) 1:10000, 5m. Brown -69 course, 3.9 km, 120m climb calculated. I edited my time and distance from what's on the watch/track because I apparently forgot to stop it at the finish.

COLD morning (but no snow on the ground), probably no more than 30F when we started just before 11:30. Partly sunny with a breeze.

Good start through 3 where I caught up to Janet F and Sue H-T (both of whom had started before me). Saw Janet through 5 and then not again, though she was increasing the distance on me with faster speed. Never saw her after that; she said she had problems on the way to 3.

5-6 was my big mistake, caused partly by being distracted along the way and then leaving the trail at the wrong place and investigating the wrong reentrant before relocating. I did get to see an awesome cave system with boulders that was on *someone's* course on my way back to the trail, so there's that. Probably lost somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes; hard to tell.

Slow and cautious to 7 as I wasn't sure there were any good attackpoints. I was pretty sure I was in the white woods on the hillside and came to a large (unmapped?) pit first, but looking down at the clearing and buildings I realized I wasn't quite far enough along. Passed a gentleman who said "I found a pit but not control" so I was careful from there, and found the right spot which was smaller than the unmapped pit. Was planning to head on the beeline to 8 but contoured around the ridge a bit longer before heading east to the road, hitting it near the sharp bend to the right. Easy the rest of the way.

I did okay on the course (minus the 5-6 leg) but would give the course design a B-. Finished 5th, I think (after Natalia who was under 50 minutes, Patty (mid-50s), Janet F (1:05-ish) and Sandy (1:06-ish)). Sorry to hear that Mary Jo punched the wrong control near #5.

Orienteering (model area) 1:03:00 [1] *** 3.0 km (21:00 / km)
spiked:5/5c

Temp in the mid to upper 30s; mostly sunny.

Checked out the five controls on the model map at Carter Caves State Resort Park after breakfast in the lodge. Some of the mapped cliff and rock features are pretty impressive. The model map's circled boulder wasn't.

Watch it be in the 80s for West Point in early May. :-/

Orienteering warm up/down (practice map) 8:00 [2] ***
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Warming up between Morehead University and the road on the strip of map they had given us to practice on and check out the sprint mapping. One staircase in particular looked tricky, reminding me to watch for traps during the race which worked for the most part.

Orienteering race (sprint) 24:24 [5] **** 2.79 km (8:45 / km) +56m 7:57 / km

Sprint Championship at Morehead State University in Kentucky, map by Mike Minium at 1:4000, 2.5 m contours

Brown 4-5, 1.9 km, 40 m climb

A cold, raw, breezy day, but no snow (oh, until the flurries started just before we left). Good for running though not so pleasant for standing around and chatting afterwards, plus there was a good hike back from finish to parking/start.

Pretty good sprint overall for me for not having done one in awhile. Some hesitations to read the map and check routes, and a bit of going back and forth in a place or two, so I'm calling 6 and 12 non-spikes. Coming out of 5 I didn't turn left at the long building but actually went around it on the north side but realized what I was doing so tucked back in at the end for control 6; George W (who had started 2 minutes behind me) passed me there but never saw me.

After 7 I knew I had to really look closely to see the options as there looked to be several dead ends with uncrossable walls. Decided that around to the left to 8 was better than around to the right where I'd have to reverse direction to continue on to 9. Coming out of 10 I had to hesitate again to read the map and determine I had to go around (again left).

To 12, although it was hard to tell because of the purple connecting line, I reasoned that there wouldn't be a staircase climbing the hill if there wasn't a way through; the line wasn't broken on the Brown maps, though Green had the same leg and their leg line was broken in two extra places for visibility. Then when I got close to the building I saw George again, heading to 13, but from an odd angle if he'd punched at the building corner on the first floor..... OH, look at that; the description says upper, so I turned back toward the walkway across. Then down the stairs on the back of the building to go to 13.

Fourth overall on F60. I expected Natalia to win, and she did in about 19 minutes. Then Janet Peterson, and Sandy was 25 seconds ahead of me--well done!

Fun to run around a campus, even though the course was too long.

slept:7.0

Drove from the narrowest part of western Maryland to Carter Caves today for the Flying Pig weekend, with only minor stress when it was raining (around Charleston, WV). Glad we didn't do the entire trip from the Lancaster PA area in one day...this was pretty tedious with all the ups and downs over the hills and mountains of West Virginia.

Now ensconced in a nice room at the Carter Caves lodge. Glad we made reservations early. :-)

Note

Middle Creek State Wildlife Area, near Kleinfeltersville, Pennsylvania

Walked on a relative short trail from a parking lot to the lake to see if we could see snow geese and Tundra swans. We saw a few... then we drove around the tour road and found a whole bunch more in the fields. The lake was still mostly ice packed but there was melting at the edges and in a few other places, and the birds were hanging out there too.

Photos I took with my 10X zoom camera -- not as good as some of Glen's (30X zoom), but they're what I have.

Somewhere in the last few hours my "log hits" number surpassed 30,000. I'm nowhere near as popular as some folks but have been an AP member practically since the beginning.

Thanks for reading. :-)
