Orienteering race (Stumble) 2:21:40 [4] *** 8.61 km (16:27 / km) +233m 14:30 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-B 2013-10

"Susquehanna" Stumble-- Short race, at Adams Creek in the Delaware Water Gap area. This map was used for the 2012 NAOC Middle race. Temps started in the upper 60s and finished in the upper 70s; mostly sunny.

Stats for the Short race: 7.7 km, 215m Long Stumble came through the start/finish and picked up another map. Three windows (take than in any order) with 3, 3, and 2 controls.

With others for the first two controls, then on my own for navigation, though I occasionally saw others out there, usually near controls. Near Alli and Richard H. Ebright at 56 in the second window, but managed to finish ahead of them both. Alli said she made an error near the end of the leg to the last window and lost time there.

My errors were at the 5th control set in a really neat area (but the mapped seasonal stream in a reentrant left no apparent mark, so I overshot and relocated from a trail), and #45 in the third window when I hit the larger stream and realized it wasn't the one I wanted when I saw a waterfall-drop.

Excellent course by Sandy F, with assistance from Brad W and others. I'm sure photos by Julie K (furlong47) will appear here on AP before too long. :-)

Temps in 60s and mostly sunny; another gorgeous late summer day (almost fall!).

HVO 60-minute score O at Hudson Highlands Nature Museum near Cornwall, NY. 1:5000 / 5m map by Bob Burg

We arrived a bit early to answer a plea from Betsy for help with registration (or instruction; we opted for taking money and registering epunches). After we processed most of the Boy Scout and cadet teams/groups, Betsy took over and let us go out on our own.

We'd been here once before and it turned out most of the score O controls were ones I'd been to on the previous course. Map's a bit flaky in some areas too. I did a counterclockwise loop and skipped two farthest up the hill (to save 5 contours of climb), one that was a boulder surrounded by rocky ground (not near a trail), and one I'd had trouble with last time. Got most with no trouble; didn't hit directly on the stone wall (2nd farthest west control), or the hill near the property line.

The other challenge was that even though there were circles on the map, there were no corresponding numbers for you to validate that you were at a score O control, just a code when you got there to match up with your descriptions. :-) Basically, navigate to the circle and find a flag. At least all the flags were hung at the circled control locations. A good exercise in adapting, and generally a fun time. Glorious weather.

Walking 26:55 [1] 1.35 mi (19:56 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Gardening (pulling weeds, stretching hamstrings), then walked, slowly, to the Post Office to mail a bill payment.

Gorgeous fall day; 60 and sunny. Thin high clouds if any.

Running (dirt) (and walking) 53:02 [4] 4.8 km (11:02 / km) +212m 9:03 / km
slept:6.75 shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

From Olivia's Overlook on Yokun Ridge in the Berkshires/Lenox area. North from the parking area, clockwise loop on the Burbank Trail tackling the ridge first. Walked where I couldn't jog and picked it up again when the trail got more level (or downhill). Almost missed the turn to Monks Pond, but figured it out.

Today's goal was proprioception, watching the trail for roots and rocks to trip me up, because I didn't want to fall on my right knee ... again. Five almost-falls, where my abs caught me in time (thank you, Pilates!!!).

Walking (indoor track) 14:00 [3] 1.0 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Wanted to do something aerobic but not in the mood for elliptical or running, so I did a fast walk on the track, trying to concentrate on turnover (since I don't know about racewalking form). Quad above right knee seemed unusually sore for the first half mile but then felt okay so kept on. The last time I remember doing a really fast walking track mile I felt it more in the shins, and was faster, but that was some time ago.

Pulldowns (9 @ 68.75#) and stretching after.
