Note

David Wheeler (not listed in rankings, so he doesn't go to A-meets), who finished less than a minutes ahead of me, helped at 3 and 7 where I was a bit off but then saw the large boulders with him standing next to them (in an orange shirt). :-) Lost him by skipping 9, but then he caught me at 14, just before the end. I did lose a couple of minutes at 12...

Orienteering race (Pygmy Goat) 2:02:36 [4] **** 8.18 km (14:59 / km) +175m 13:32 / km
spiked:11/14c slept:6.0 shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Baldwin Hill, Ashburnham, MA. Temp upper 60s at start, low to mid 70s at finish, and clear blue sky. Less humid than yesterday, which was a blessing. Blackflies were out, and annoying in the southern reaches of the map, but not much otherwise. The Pygmy Goaters, as well as the Billygoaters, were allowed one skip.

I took one fall, on the way down the hill to the 1st(!) control, in full view of a half dozen or so others. How embarrassing. :-) Bruised a knee, hand, and have a nice scrape on my right forearm, which made pushing away face-high branches a bit uncomfortable unless I remembered to lead with my left (map) hand. A couple of smallish bobbles (no wandering!) which I'll catch up with later when I download my watch. And I had to retie (not retire!) my shoe (and top off my water bottle as I decided to skip the 2nd water stop) at the water control at the stream junction (4P/13B).

Surprised to finish 9th of about 23 (plus several dnf's), and second woman overall(!), maybe a couple minutes ahead of Mary Jo, and behind (well behind, I'm sure) Kristin Hall.

More added with Garmin upload: I skipped #9 (#18 on BG map), after deciding I didn't want to climb up to it. That allowed me to do a fairly mindless trail jog (and walking where needed). It also allowed me to see the leader, Will, who passed me on the trail just south of the dam in the middle-East side of the map, and a few others who passed a few minutes later. Since he passed me at around 92 minutes, I figured the finishing time was going to be long this year, and it was (typical is 95-100 minutes) at 106 minutes; I think because the map was pretty technical.

Results Yep, about a half hour after Kristin.

Orienteering race 35:09 [4] ** 2.85 km (12:20 / km)
spiked:19/21c rhr:50 slept:7.0 shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

21 controls in any order (but you were supposed to get them all) "orange" course on a new map of small Hayes Nature Park in Clifton Park, NY. Mapped area is about 0.3 sq km (~800x400m). A fun format, similar to a woods sprint, but you had to figure out where to go, and make sure you visited them all. Hardest part was finding which box to punch on your punchcard. :-)

Chose not to to do the "long" course (7km) because I'm doing that much tomorrow at the Pygmy Goat. Also, it was largely a neighborhood run (street O) with a bit of park O at the end. Partly sunny with temps in the 70s and steamy after this morning's rain.

Order: 226-206-211-210-202-207-203-201-227-219-231-220-209-216-204-213-214-205-217-221-215 Would have been more efficient to get 205 and 217 differently, but I was mostly done and checking where I hadn't been yet and discovered those two lurking in the middle of the map.

Map and courses by Bill Jameson and Eric Hamilton who live in the neighborhoods around the park.

A very large maple sits next to the parking lot, likely at least a couple hundred years old.

Pilates class 55:00 [2]
slept:7.5

With weights. Some difficult yoga-y moves at the beginning to be sure we were paying attention. :-)

After, a dozen leg presses with 90# and the same number of pulldowns with 62.5#. May be time to increase weight just a bit. Amazed to see that the person ahead of me on the leg press machine had the weight set at 490#!! (That plus three 5# add-ons is as much as you can get on that machine.)
3 PM

Walking (grassy paths) 34:37 [3] 3.24 km (10:41 / km)
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

At Ooms Conservation Area on Rock City Road in Chatham Center, while Glen ran. About 68 and sunny with just a bit of breeze. Paths were mostly pretty nice, with a couple of soggy area but not too muddy.

Lots of birdsong, as the conservation area is situated around a good-size pond. We saw what we think were a couple of brown thrashers. I also saw some red winged blackbirds, and one gray bird I think was a catbird (or mockingbird...I can never remember the distinguishing characteristics without looking them up).

Note

I usually don't share Facebook-found stuff here, especially Buzzfeed pages, but this one is a keeper.

Best book-related photographs

My favorite? #12 ("autographed" copy of the Bible) :-)

Pilates class 50:00 [2]

With rings. Bit of a late start, and she started with breathing and low boat (lift legs and shoulders just a bit off the ground). Not my favorite kind of warm up, but it was a good workout afterwards, including lunges. Some knee and shoulder complaints, but ankle is holding up okay.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
slept:7.5

Body mostly okay after the weekend, just tired. Stepped without risers so only about a 3" lift for my knees, which felt okay. 5-5-5x2 (aerobics, stepping, weights) then stretching.

On one of the arm exercises--with upper arm out 90 degrees to body and forearms extended up (overhead press start) holding light weights: we just did small pulses and my right shoulder said WHAT?!?! Gotta do those more often--seems like a great move to supplement the pulldowns I do at the Y.
