We had to replace the bottom burner (bake) element in the range yesterday. Upon removing the back panel to unclip the burner prongs, Glen found this unlucky souvenir (photo not for the squeamish).

Walk/Jog 58:37 [2] 4.9 km (11:58 / km) +136m 10:30 / km
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Alford Springs (BNRC preserve in MA just over the NY state line). Temp in the mid 70s and mostly cloudy (and threatening rain which didn't really dvelop). Dropped Glen off to do a longer run, then parked at the end of Old Village Road at the closed gate to hike the trail to the stream and back. The trail I was on was a wide jeep track with foot tall grass and little shade. Instead of continuing on it down the slope to the stream, I decided to climb the connector trail to the other part of the trail, then continued to the high point. View from there was okay but not spectacular, mostly of a green hillside (Monument Mtn, most likely) and some fields. There was a smaller portion of this view from 3/4 up the connector trail (the last big hairpin before heading south-southwest). Took pictures of the mountain laurel hiding in the trees instead (we'd seen more along the road heading up to the parking area.

Uninspiring preserve; at least it wasn't buggy.

Note

Forgot my AOWN note: Heard, then saw, a critter in the woods off to the side of the trail a couple minutes in. It started scurrying up a tree; my first thought was young bear cub, but then I saw the mask around its eyes...raccoon. I was surprised because there wasn't much water around, but later noted several drainage culverts under the road/trail in that area. Also, heard a barred owl calling, when I was up on the ridge stopping to photograph the Mtn laurel.

Instead of Pilates today, I went to help field check part of Goold Orchards's property. Phil H-T had created a basemap from USGS topo and aerial info, and we needed to check the level of detail of roads, trails, and add any other small features he might have missed. Didn't take me too long to check my small section. The club likely won't use it much as it's private property, but the Orchard wants to use the map for an orienteering event organized by CRNA and/or the Stride program for disabled folks (athletes?).

Would probably make a good beginner event location. Or a 30-location score O with a 30 minute time limit or some other twist? :-)

EDIT: Added FR track

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

My cold is making me sluggish, otherwise a good class. Why do biceps curls with 8 pounds seem hard? I used to be able to do 10s. Maybe she has upped the reps or something.
11 AM

Walking 24:20 [2] 1.35 mi (18:01 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

To P.O. to pick up a parcel, and back.

slept:6.5

"Allergies" seem to be a mild cold, instead, with slight sore throat preceding yesterday's runny nose. Didn't sleep exceedingly well.
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Weights were used occasionally; more upper body than usual. Runny nose wasn't helpful, and made the desired deep breathing hard to attain.

Did adductors (80 & 75 lbs) and pulldowns (7) after, then quit.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]
slept:7.0

Mixed it up having step first, then aerobics and strength. :-) Hot this morning; though a T-storm has since come through and cooled it down here.

Whatever I'm allergic to in the spring is pretty strong right now (I sneeze when the cottonwood fluff flies, though that's not the cause, I'm sure---something else that "ripens" at the same time).

Haven't found any ticks from Moreau and hope not to.

Hiking (Uphill) 31:23 [2] 1.84 km (17:06 / km) +156m 12:00 / km

Hiked from Spier Falls Rd parking area to meeting place for team training weekend exercises. Alex was there along with several US team members plus the Owens family from VT.

Orienteering (control pick) 1:06:38 [3] 3.91 km (17:03 / km) +93m 15:14 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Training on the plateau at Moreau, thanks to Alex and Ali and everyone else who helped set this up. I did the first 12 controls on the control-pick exercise, then headed back to the start. I probably should have worked on improving memorization with the partner exercise, but we had limited time and both Glen and I wanted to do this one.

Edit: Updated # controls. No relocation needed (except on the way from 12 to the start), but I counted as non-spikes those where I was in the circle but not finding the streamer or mini control right away but having to look around a bit. At 2, for example, I saw the cliff rather than the rocky knoll in the map circle, and had to look at the description to confirm what I was actually looking for (d'oh--the cliff was a control location I convinced Glen not to use in the A meet). That said, I wasn't far off on any of the ones I didn't get right away. Very fun.
2 PM

Hiking (Downhill) 42:10 [1] 1.82 km (23:07 / km) +71m 19:21 / km
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Hiked back to the car, taking the staircase of death (as Glen calls it)/blue trail to the 'amphitheater' and then the white trail to the yellow trail and back to the parking lot at Spier Falls Rd. Somehow Glen's watch measured both hikes closer to 2 km than 1.83, but I log what mine says. :-) Quads got a workout; some of those descents were pretty tricky (muddy and steep).

Despite bug spray, there were plenty of voracious mosquitoes around if you were going slowly enough...we killed our share. Bug spray recommended.
