Note

Found this link to a talk by a NY Times writer about "simplicity." (Warning -- video lasts 21+ minutes)

Sure hope we can make the new USOF/OUSA site "simple." Or at least, simpler than it is now. It's nice to have people helping who seem to know their particular areas well.

Note

Since Swampfox is posting bird sightings, I will too.

On my walk to/from the mailbox (<1/4 mi each way), I pass the remnants of an apple orchard. Well, today I heard tapping (9-10 notes, fast to slow in a particular pattern), repeated 3 times. The bird was tapping on a metal street sign, and when I could see it I could tell it wasn't one of the woodpeckers I usually see here (downy, hairy, red-bellied; even pileated, tho not recently). It had red both above and below its beak! I looked it up in our bird book and discovered it was a yellow-bellied sapsucker; I saw its friend, too. They like old orchards. ;-)

Re: the Messier Catalog discussion in PG's log --

I found an F57 -- except it's a retired British Navy frigate. :-)
1 PM

Running (dirt) 48:40 [3] 3.14 mi (15:30 / mi) +114m 13:56 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 705 8.5D

Wanted to do an easy trail run so went to Kennedy Park in Lenox. Parked near reservoir (no other cars there, at least when I went out, so it was easier to change clothes since I had come from volunteering at the elementary school library).

Out on mt. bike trail, then climbed up to main trail but took side trails around neat rocky hills before heading back to the car.

[Saturday update: finally got my Garmin track loaded; Garmin transfer didn't want to work yesterday.]

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using balls. Didn't do extensive hamstring exercises like sometimes; did do a lot of hip and of course abs.
11 AM

Walking (Trails) 32:57 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 5

After the class went to East Greenbush Town Park to check out trails. Hard to find at first, and some were quite muddy. Might be a good place to run trails in the summer except I'm not a town resident and wouldn't want to pay $4 every time--however, maybe they don't check passes as much midweek? Looks like the swimming beach is closed too (by order of the health department), meaning fewer residents will show up.

No one to collect fees; I didn't get ticketed/towed for not having a permit.

Note

The Aussie JWOC team posted a Photo-O using street view clips from Google (Google Earth?) -- creative idea!

(Why do I have the Aussie JWOC team 'favorited'? I really don't know. :-) )
9 AM

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

The class grew from about 6 people when I arrived, to 12 within a couple minutes of starting. A few minutes later it grew to 18, the largest class I've seen at this location. No stepping; not enough room, and not enough steps!

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using bands today, with the promise of balls on Thursday.

Discovered today that the barista who served me at Starbucks today had heard of orienteering. I wore my 2008 US Champs shirt (the tan one) and she asked if I'd been there, and said she had enjoyed it in Girl Scouts. I took the opportunity to mention there's a local club!
2 PM

Walking warm up/down 53:31 [2] 5.18 km (10:20 / km) +42m 9:56 / km
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 5

Warm up, cool down, and recovery portions of Hill Interval workout.

Running (paved) hills (dirt) 5:36 [4] 0.9 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 5

10 x ~90m intervals on a hill

Note

I'll upload tracks from yesterday's middle and sprints later, but wanted to note a decent hiccup remedy--suck a bit of juice from a lemon slice if you have one handy. Worked for me after my usual method didn't. ;-)

Note

I worked at the finish of today's long races with Seabass, sitting out in the sun near the beach (which felt good, but I needed to cover up despite sunscreen; clouded up later). The competitors had a LONG run across either the concrete sidewalk or the sand along the side of it after coming out of the woods. Everyone was out of the woods by 2:30. The WOC team was announced around 1:30.

I'm not logging several jogs back and forth from the download/assembly area to the finish location.
