Orienteering race (brown course) 1:30:08 [3] *** 4.0 km (22:32 / km) +170m 18:35 / km
spiked:7/10c shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Day 1 brown at Mt. Tom. Started off poorly when I exited the trail to # 1 (it had been a trail run most of the way) and climbed the hill and somehow changed direction, getting to # 2 first -- arrrrgggghhhh!!! Got straightened out and found 1 and hustled back to 2. Route to 4 apparently wasn't optimum -- perhaps I should have stayed up on the spur longer and run the road, but I got there.

Took the trail wide right around to 5, figuring a gradual climb on trails all the way would be faster than an up-and-over the saddle on the more direct route (which would have added 4 extra contours).

Bobbled 6 a bit; the terrain didn't match what I saw on the map. Bobbled 7 a lot, especially after hitting my attack point (stream junction) and then mistaking it for a stream bend farther south. I did the tour of the spur before realizing where I was and correcting. Fine the rest of the way in.

I figure at least 15 minutes of error (maybe as much as 20). Could have done better, in any case. I plan to do better tomorrow!

gps distance ~ 6.15 km (Garmin 5.83, SportTracks 6.47)

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Step aerobics at the Y, using the shortest version of the step and being careful how I stepped, avoiding twisting movements on the knees. And I survived. This is the class I last attended in March when I had the knee twinges. Have to take it slow and careful and avoid deep knee bending (lunges), but it may work out.

This class rates an intensity of 2 rather than one because it gets my pulse rate up higher than the M-W class.

Followed by strength -- Fitlinxx machines (arms) plus a dozen pull-downs at 56.25 lbs.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Another Wednesday, another ex. class in Chatham. :-)

Fine workout including two 30+ second planks, some stepping, weight work, and all the usual stuff. Again, I was okay using the shorter step; knees don't hurt any more than usual (no under-the-kneecap twinges).

I'm thinking my ankle problem might be due to a slight achilles strain, so I have to watch that this weekend.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Class in Chatham, with aerobics, a little bit of stepping (lowest step didn't seem to bother my otherwise bothered knee and ankle) and nice stretching.

Orienteering race 1:28:12 [3] *** 5.4 km (16:20 / km) +150m 14:20 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Green course at Sessions Woods, which was a re-run of the A-meet course from 2002... which I happened to miss due to some school event for my then-14-year-old son. No wonder it didn't look familiar to me. :-)

Not careful to 1 or 5 so a couple minutes lost there. On 6, I stopped at the right place on the trail, looked towards a 2-3 m high cliff but didn't see the boulder (control feature) right in front of it -- it blended in so well. Took me a minute to realize the boulder was a separate feature and there was a bag there. All in all, kept in touch with the map pretty well. The second half of the course (7-13) was in the northern, more open part of the map with really nice running in mostly wide open woods... except I couldn't move fast. Left ankle has been bothering me since early in the month (NA? Lowlander?) and aches after I've been on it for a bit, so I'd stop to walk for awhile, which didn't feel much better than running. Resting it this week is probably a good idea so I can run next weekend...

Note

GPS track says I went 6.95 km ([edited] average of FR-6.47 and SportTracks-7.5).
