Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Easy exercise and stretching today. Triceps extremely sore from falling twice on Saturday and once on Sunday, so I only used 10 lbs instead of 15 (overhead triceps) and it still hurt a lot. They'll be better in a day or so.

Orienteering race (Green Y) 1:32:47 [4] *** 5.8 km (16:00 / km) +263m 13:02 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Better run than yesterday, going a little bit off (to the left, as usual) on the way to 2, and a little father to the left on the way to 8, but recovering before I got too disoriented, maybe 3-4 minutes lost total. Steady and careful on the long legs today, and that paid off.

Lack of fitness for this much orienteering showed in 1) tiredness after the sprint on Friday and 2) lack of mental concentration at the start on Saturday, partly due to tiredness? More training required if I want to have fewer bobbles, I guess...

Very nice courses by Quantico Orienteering Club, and an outstanding championship event.

Orienteering race (Green Y) 1:34:20 [4] **** 5.2 km (18:08 / km) +200m 15:13 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Best run I could do, not counting the 18 minutes of errors on the first 2 controls! I would have been so happy with 75 minutes. Instead I was unprecise to the first control and bounced around for 6 extra minutes (Lex followed a better plan); veered off 35 degrees on the way to the second and just kept going and going... 12 minutes lost there. A minute or so on # 5, where I was uphill and didn't think the flag I saw could possibly be on a thicket--it sure didn't stand out from the rest of the vegetation there. Saw Lex (who had started 18 minutes behind me) at # 2 and through most of the rest of the course, either ahead or behind me. But at least I did find them all.

Note

Awards ceremony for the Sprints (and WRE, but that didn't affect me) and a reception at the recently opened Museum of the Marine Corps near the Quantico base in Triangle. The building was pretty awesome, and the exhibits were interesting. Classy event with uniformed caterers serving punch and cake, too. :-) I didn't win a raffle drawing prize, though--guess I have enough stuff!

Event: US Champs

Orienteering (training) 35:00 [2]
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Classic model map at Prince William Forest -- walked or jogged between selected points (I visited most but not all) to see what the mapping/terrain were like. It helped a lot (but not entirely on Saturday) to get me into the event this weekend.

Orienteering (training) 20:00 [1]
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Sprint model map at PWF, near the sprint venue. While it showed a slightly different part of the forest than the classic model, we heard later than the person designing the sprint model had no conversation with the actual sprint course setter and the model wasn't really indicative of what we'd find in the sprint. No matter, it showed a few mapping items that I hadn't seen on the classic model and therefore was still a useful exercise. Mostly walked it because I didn't want to expend all my energy before the sprint. :-)

Orienteering race (sprint) 27:47 [5] *** 2.5 km (11:07 / km) +87m 9:28 / km
spiked:16/17c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Green sprint course US championship. In all the excitement at the start I didn't go far enough north to hit the trail before diving down into the woods, in the reentrant area E-SE of the control, but once I was in the woods I saw the bag to my left. Did better on the rest of the controls, with a minor bobble to 8 based on not exactly following my plan but recovering easily. I don't think that not taking the trail hurt me any because I hit another trail after 80 m in the woods anyway.

5th out of 8 F50+, 3rd US behind Shelley Pennington (OLOU) and Lex B. (UNO). Hmmm -- Natalia and Tracey and Sandy didn't run this event; perhaps saving their energy/focus for the weekend?

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]

Ex. class in Chatham.

Jennifer asked if anyone would wear a Halloween costume to class today; everyone was pretty non-committal. I wore an orange trail run shirt with dark grey shorts -- traditional Halloween colors, right?

I walked in the door and was greeted by the exercise 'dominatrix', complete with whip and boots (though not spiked heels). Her stockings gave the impression of bruises and scratches all over her legs (I think they were printed with roses and leaves). Fortunately she wasn't the only one in the spirit as one of the younger participants wore a leotard and tutu during the entire class. The rest of us are sticks-in-the-mud. :-)

The Jenster has a great sense of humor!

Walking 29:59 [3] 2.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

South on Rt. 66. ~56F and sunny (except in the shade); no scarydog today.

AOWN: Or rather, human nature -- a trucker on the Berkshire Spur (that my route took me over) just had to sound his horn as he passed under the bridge that I was going over, like a catcall.
