Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]
slept:7.0

Nice, typical class. Right shoulder/upper back more sore than usual--think it's from a fall where I scraped my left forearm, but probably caught myself with right arm too.

Orienteering race (Long) 1:18:28 [3] **** 3.4 km (23:05 / km) +50m 21:30 / km
spiked:6/10c slept:6.5 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

What a map! I turned it over at the start and said "whoa!" First impression is very little white; then, light green and rough open pock-marked with blue and marsh.

Apparently I never started my Forerunner (I thought I had, but it started when I finished...).

Rattled, I never really got my head around how the eastern part of the map was depicted. Used compass to get me in the right direction but couldn't match features with the map so quite unsure where I was. Got to a point about 50-60m NE of my control point on the edge of a wet area. Instead of the pond mapped I read it as a marshseveral hundred meters west. Tried to head south to trail to relocate, but when I hit a trail I couldn't match it win the map, still. Saw Sandy at some point, maybe halfway between start and 1? She'd started ~16 minutes behind me.

Once I did find 1, I still wasn't getting into the map, seeing only some features on the way to 2 actually on the map. Passed a control flag on my way to 3 and made sure to check it; wasn't mine but was recognizable as a pit--yay, there's a couple of pits right next to my line; only a little farther to go.

Next two legs were to controls 100 m or less from the road (beeline meant more light green, and more subtle features), so I ran alongside it. Managed to mess up one more control, a relatively short leg (~150-200m?), was sloppy on 7, and then finished fine. Ugh.

11th W55-64, tho I'd been in 13th when we left. Two women were dsq'd--haven't heard why. Probably could have done around 58-60 if I'd
been able to get into the map.

Not sure I'd return to this map, despite some folks' rave reviews on AP. ;-)

Orienteering race (sprint) 15:56 [5] *** 1.8 km (8:51 / km) +10m 8:37 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

[8/24 -- added FR track. FR distance reported was 2.25km]

Sprint 2 at NRC North on the east side of Ottawa. Cloudy, some light sprinkles but otherwise just overcast, temps in the 60s.

Found all the controls right where I looked for them but I'm not the swiftest runner; finished 8th W55-64 (out of 16? that's how many there were last I looked). I was happy with my run. Now we'll see how the long goes tomorrow.

MJC had a much better day today and finished 1st. :-) (Marion O ran W35+.) Glen, too, had a nice run today and was 2nd in M55.

We spent the afternoon with my brother/sister-in-law walking around Ottawa between Parliament and the Market. Lunch at an Irish pub on the Parliament side of the canal. Too late to get tickets for a Parliament tour (in English), so we just walked around the buildings. We were getting a bit cold, so a stop at Chapters (and Starbucks) was in order. When we were done there the rain had pretty much stopped. Some of the market stalls were closing up, but I got some wild blueberries to take home. We walked some more, seeing the outside of the Art Gallery and the "Maman" (very large spider) statue out front, and the statue of Champlain with the view of the start of the Rideau Canal flight of locks going up from the Ottawa River. Also went inside the Notre Dame basilica across the street from the Gallery (which had closed). Supper at Ahora, a little Mexican restaurant we found while contemplating a Vietnamese restaurant upstairs from it. Very nice. :-)

Long course tomorrow, then find a way back home.

Orienteering (model map) 57:00 [1] ***
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Model map near Kanata Lake (COC middle model). Walked around most of the controls. Woods were a bit wet from yesterday's rain.

Orienteering race (middle) 42:17 [3] *** 2.1 km (20:08 / km) +45m 18:11 / km
spiked:5/8c slept:7.0 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Didn't quite get into this orienteering thing today. :-) Bobbled 1 and 4, and major brain collapse at 7, where I was in the right place but didn't think I'd gone far enough (we were on 1:7500 and I guess I was calibrated for 1:10000), so I didn't check the code on the bag 15 m away, in a similar feature to what I was looking for... sheesh.

Ended up wandering a bit before I got properly relocated; 10 min lost. And I figure maybe 4-4:30 on 1 and 4.

Finished 9th of about 18 or so F55-64. Fastest (Marion Owen) was around 22 min. Official splits list 43:17; FR distance is 2.01 miles.

Note

Map was Hidden Meadows and Spreckley's Trails near Carp, Ontario.

Note

8/24 -- I posted my gps track on RouteGadget (hope the link works) for all to see. I need to learn not to do things like this ever again. :-)

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham.

Didn't do much yesterday; Saturday went to Norman Rockwell Museum with son and d-i-l, and to a wine tasting at a nearby orchard/winery, so was on my feet a bit more than normal even if it wasn't aerobic. Fun afternoon. :-)
