Orienteering race (Gunston Hall Green) 1:29:56 [4] *** 5.25 km (17:08 / km) +130m 15:15 / km
spiked:10/14c shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

FR distance = 4.74 miles with 103 m climb

Out early so that I could get back for Amy to go out on Green as well. Control 5 wasn't out when I got there, and I knew that that missing controls were a possibility, and that was the only one. Snagged to punch from the course setter who was placing a nearby control. Lost maybe two minutes. Then an adventure to 8 in general and to 9 when I got to the area. AP says 10 as well, but I mostly nailed that one, albeit slowly.

Another turnout of 150+ starts, a glorious spring day, and so far, at least, I have not found any ticks. What more can I ask for?!

Orienteering race (White) 11:09 [4] *** 1.6 km (6:58 / km) +5m 6:52 / km
spiked:8/10c weight:177lbs shoes: Hoka Pokey

FR distance = .99 mile with 1.2 m climb

Ran around late in the day to get a feeling if I can do two courses at WP next Saturday. Dead flat so ran as hard as I could. Fun! More fun if there had been others out there darting around as well. And, I didn't even do it to get over 10 hours for the week. That was just a bonus.

Verdict is that I can probably handle two runs next Saturday, but Sunday may be in doubt. Will see how I feel tomorrow. Right heel a little sore.

Biking 57:00 [1] 10.22 mi (5:35 / mi) +28m 5:32 / mi
weight:176lbs

Caderock to Great Falls and further on C&O Canal on a crisp morning. Treated to sightings of deer, ducks, squirrels, geese, and a magnificent male Cardinal posing, just for me. Early start meant that there wasn't major tourist traffic through the falls area, but there will be later today.

Biking 50:00 [1] 10.14 mi (4:56 / mi)

Forgot a water bottle, so at the turn around, I had a GU and a diet Dr Pepper chaser. Burp. Return trip was fun, and I managed to mostly just enough the ride and not think too much.

The bluebells are out in force.

Whenever I pass this island, I imagine what it would be like to live there.

Note

After a nap, it was out to put the second coat on the deck.

Near the end, I noticed a large bird in the side yard, but I couldn't really see it well without my glasses. Went inside to get my glasses and camera, and was surprised it was still there, and let me get pretty close to it as well.

There was evidence of tail feathers in the grass, and the hawk was interested in the garden, but there didn't seem to be the bird body nearby.

After I got too close, it flew over me and landed on the freshly painted deck railing. Sort of like putting its initials in newly poured concrete...

Swimming 52:00 [1]
weight:176lbs

Got to within blocks of the pool to swim at lunchtime, but I detoured to home to eat 11 mini butterfingers instead, which didn't help the aggravation I was experiencing, and just irritated me more.

Decided to not let the sad seed win today, so after dinner, I was able to squeeze in some laps before closing time. Jaw is still somewhat clenched, but the end is near...house settlement on Monday.

Biking 1:40:00 [3] 20.14 mi (4:58 / mi) +107m 4:53 / mi
weight:176lbs

Out and back, with the return trip into the slighter than recent headwind. Since it is the faster direction, I was able to keep a good pace despite the wind, and it was fun and felt easy. Getting in shape - Weeee!

Swimming 1:00:00 [1]
weight:176lbs

Since I got to the pool to swim just as it opened, and there were lanes free on either side of me, I did a 400 yard time trial to include the mechanics of a snake swim - touch wall, duck under lane line, push off in new lane. Harder then I expected, and some more practice is needed, especially making sure I stay close to the wall when I go under the lane marker so that I can get into a good position for a good push off.

Managed to go 8:05, though I was gasping when I finished. Took a 60 break, and then finished out the first 30 minutes. Then a 2.5 minute break and another 30 minutes. Breathing much better on this half, so I will need to do a warm up on the bike or something at the race to get my breathing in a good place.

Misc (Stain deck) 5:00 [1]

Supposed to have my annual physical this afternoon, but when that was canceled, I took the opportunity to get the first coat of stain/waterproofing on the deck.

Lots of squatting to brush dirt off since the power washing was done a couple of weeks ago. Darn that flying junk from the trees! Surprised that my knees did not object. Glad the deck is sort of on the small side though.

Deck is in pretty good shape for 25 years old.

Running/Walking 1:10:00 intensity: (45:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) 5.5 mi (12:44 / mi) +15m 12:37 / mi
weight:176lbs shoes: Hoka Pokey

Ah, new shoes...I guess it was about time. Didn't solve the ugh slug lump feeling, but I was outside enjoying the sunshine, so it was good.

I tried to let my hair grow out, but I couldn't stand the mess...

Not drastically short though...

Biking 1:50:00 [3] 20.75 mi (5:18 / mi)
weight:177lbs

With the rain gone for the day, and temps near 70, I figured I better ride today, despite the 20-25 mph winds. I am not going to let some measly winds push me around, am I!? Shorts and short sleeve were perfect. I didn't look nearly as silly as the guy in full wind outfit, neck cover, etc. Dude! 70 degrees! How do you manage in the cold?!

The same loop as March 31, except in the reverse order. Going downhill on the Custis Trail portion was much more fun. Then I hit the Mount Vernon Trail...if ever I could have used a tow, this was the time. About 7 miles of major head and side wind. Especially brutal along the airport portion, made worse after a plane flew in for landing. Feels like a whoosh, and I felt like I was being pushed backward! Is that even possible?

When I thought it couldn't get any worse, I hit the straight away along the train tracks and felt like I was going backwards again. Pushed around but not deseated, so I eventually made it back to the start, and it was a fine day for a ride.
