Trail Run 38:00 [2] 3.0 mi (12:40 / mi)
shoes: Poison Ice Bugs

Not feeling real inclined to go out on a course today. Very distracted and vulnerable. Things were behind getting set up at the finish, so it was well after 9 before I could think about gong out.

I was encouraged to get ready and go, so I got prepped and ran from the Finish to the Parking. From there, I got a ride to the Start. After quickly determining that there were no Green Y starts for at least an hour, I was resigned to just turn around and go back. But just then, a Red Y spot opened. So, I took it and announced that I would be unofficial and turn back at the point which was closest to the Finish. Well, that was after the first two nearby controls. So, I got 1 & 2, went to the road, and then the trail to the stream crossing, up through the mountain laurel to the cabin area. Changed clothes at the van and reported to the Finish.

Not upset at all - happy to get a run in, and content to be at the Finish not missing the action.

It was really a very good day, or three days.

Note

The results structure in action. Not one person asked for results on sheets of paper the whole weekend.

Sandy was an invaluable part of the weekend. I can't thank her enough.

Had to chuckle when we were referred to, collectively, as Salerie. Well, at least I laughed later when it was explained to me. Yes, I am a bit slow at times.

The weather was absolutely beautiful.

The finish line crew was excellent. I was so happy to see Darcy this morning. Darcy is happy to help by having people download - all day long. Did she even get a bathroom break?!

Off to bed. Have to unpack and return the van in the morning.

Event: US Champs

Orienteering race (US Sprint Champs Green) 29:30 [4] *** 2.5 mi (11:48 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs - Red Storm

Hopes of 10 min/k were dashed by ~5 minutes in error. Oh, well.

First attempt to start was aborted at the second call up line. Started for real about 20 minutes later. But that didn't really affect my run. Messed up #1 a little bit. Also, a large error to the control on the bridge - when north instead of south when I hit the stream. And I really lost concentration when I got to the "easy" controls back near the finish. I drew Gary T astray looking for the control on the rootstock. Just butchered this "simple" control.

But, all in all, the day was quite lovely, if not a bit hectic at times. I am really looking forward to the weekend, and rising to the challenge of doing well on my course, and on the results.

P.S. I almost cried today as I was driving into the park. It was just such a relief to have the event day arrive and be able to "open the package." My emotions have ranged from vulnerable to cranky to touchy to bitchy this past week or so. I have been quite the mess. I am glad I took Monday off!

P.S.S. I do believe the results structure turned out very well.

Running race (FT Myer Halloween 5K) 29:45 [3] 3.0 mi (9:55 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Banana 4

Again, the course is not quite 5K. I wore a costume. I thought that the light fabric would be cool enough, but apparently old polyester is very warm to run in. Well, the felt hat didn't help matters either. I carried the hat, hood, and hand covers about half of the race.

I was dying and had to let the woman who was behind me the whole way go by at 2.5 miles. Here is another picture with a buddy and me afterwards.

And the last time I wore this scarecrow costume - 1989. That would made Sarah eight years old.
