Beautiful, sunny day and lots of happy orienteers. I enjoyed the orienteering much more than I thought I would. It helps that I knew the map wasn't ... perfect (it's not a CMOUSA map, after all) and that I'm pretty sure the undergrowth was worse last year. So my expectations were in a good place.

It wasn't all rosy though, with a very rough start - didn't take a great route to the first control and ended up stumbling through a boulder field feeling really slow. Then I had a pretty amusing parallel error that I suspected early but, since the map didn't make any more sense for the parallel route than for the correct route, I just kept going and figured I'd figure it out later. I did, but the whole thing cost me a good five minutes. Also, clearly I need to expand my definition of "knoll" to include things that are rock on all surfaces.

Then things clicked into place and I actually felt like I was orienteering, probably for the first time on a New England area map in a long time. I'm not going to say that I'm quite ready to move back up to running Red regularly but it is encouraging that I had a lot more oomph today.

Running (road) 36:55 intensity: (34 @0) + (7:24 @1) + (28:47 @2) + (10 @3) 6.62 km (5:35 / km)
ahr:149 max:169 shoes: Jack (Mizuno Wave Rider)

Oof, had a progression run on the schedule but this is all I had the energy for today. Squeezed it in between morning and afternoon commitments but before lunch. Actually felt fine running, though my knees feel like something is tugging at the top of them. And this was as far as I wanted to go.

Busy day, Melissa out all morning at a conference while Lukas and I did soccer/playground/bikesploration. Then Nields show #1, the kids' show, where Lukas walked right up to Katryna during a break between songs and requested "Freight Train". We are pretty sure he meant the kid song, but instead we got the Elizabeth Cotten version. I play that one somewhat frequently (though not with an upside-down guitar) so it sounded familiar to him and he was satisfied, and told them that was what he meant.

Back home and then out again without Lukas (thanks Barb!) for Nields show #2, grownup show, which was really great, probably the best one I've been to.

We're all still sleeping in, apparently, which was fine for me today since I was up late working and listening to Game 7. On the agenda this morning was cruise intervals and I (surprise!) hit up the river path for them.

4x[1000m thresholdy + 200m recovery]

These felt pretty good, definitely more thresholdy than last week's workout, though they were pretty short so that helps. Last one was into the wind which was much stronger than I realized. Guess it probably helped me on the second one. Character building.

During one of the repeats a woman I didn't know rode by me on her bike and yelled something encouraging. I don't remember exactly what she said but it ended with "sister!" so I think I now belong to some kind of sisterhood of feminist bike path users.

Note
(rest day)

Did pretty much nothing today except rolling my left calf (with one of those hard bumpy foam rollers, tyvm). While doing so Lukas decided to *sit on my left leg*. Got a little taste of "excruciating" for a moment there.

Note

I need some AP follower help. Where did I post the video of Lukas very enthusiastically punching the same control for like a full minute? I found the original video but couldn't figure out how I had shared it with the world.

Running intervals (road/track) 50:54 intensity: (12:34 @1) + (33:42 @2) + (4:11 @3) + (27 @4) 8.03 km (6:20 / km)
ahr:150 max:179 shoes: Jack (Mizuno Wave Rider)

We all woke up ridiculously late this morning. What is happening?!

Off to the Harvard track again, this time for 200s. 6x200 with 200 walk/jog recoveries.

41, 43, 41, 40, 40, 39

Things felt good, generally speaking, though I don't know that I could have gone any faster without losing control of my limbs.

Dropped the car off at the auto body place and ran home, collecting a few streets on the way. The good news is that I basically do not have to think about the car for the next two weeks. Hopefully.
