Paddling race 1:35:00 [4]

New England Canoe-O Championships. I do not know how long or how far we went, b/c my Garmin alternated between being coy and being finicky.

J-J and I both had time constraints, so, much as we might have like to challenge the long course, we did the Medium. No opportunities to split to gain much advantage, few opportunities to portage. Tully Lake is a delightful place, though.

Paddling 45:00 [1]

Paddling a 2-person canoe w/ Susan at Hopkinton SP. In prep for this Sunday, I tried to paddle stern. My incompetence at knowing the strokes and inability to read the movement of the boat gives me new appreciation for a competent stern paddler.

When I looked at the GPS track for last Sunday's paddle, on the leg where we crossed the lake, we went straight (Andy M in the stern). Yesterday, we wiggled all over the place, getting the boat oddly oriented several times. Even at the end, returning to the dock, after 30 minutes of learning, we were aiming for a point of land where I could see boats at anchor beyond them. I said, "If I steer us straight, the relative position of the point and the boat beyond it won't change (much)." I was marginally successful for a bit, and then lost concentration or something, because the two reference objects shifted.
