Brown Y day 2 at Bigelow Hollow. Much better day, although not without some adventures. Only one control I had to hunt for, and that hunt was only about 4 minutes. A few sketchy route choices. The day started out inauspiciously, with a very sore foot, but it felt better after icing it before breakfast. Then I forgot my o-suit and had a moment of panic before I realized I could just wear what I had on. Ended up 3rd on the course, a fair amount better than the 29th yesterday.

Map and route

1. Somehow I looked at the map and didn't click that that it was oriented south, and had a moment of distress wondering why I was on this trail heading west instead of east. By the time I calmed down, it was too late to take the perfectly fine direct route, so stayed on the trail and went up and along the hill out to the end.
2. Right of the line to avoid having to go down the cliffs, down to the stream and left and in. Just fine. Saw Leslie at the control.
3. Thought about going up to the trail on the left, and really should have,. Instead stayed on the stream/marsh to the little bridge then took the trail up through the green from there. Could see the hill from where I left the stone wall, so reasonably easy.
4. Found a clear path through the green, and ended up well north of the control. Checked a few reentrants and rock faces, finally down toward the lower trail from which I could see the big cliff and knew the control was just past it. Saw Tony F heading N as I was heading south in the general direction of the control, apparently already on his way to 5. Lost about 4 minutes on this leg.
5. Saw that some other folks had dropped down to the trail, but just went straight, more or less, hitting the E/W segment of the trail and W for a few steps then finding my way in. I had seen the cliff description, but hadn't noticed it was top of, and very surprised to find it apparently on no particular feature, but it had the right number, so I got out of there without actually ever seeing the cliff.
6. Trail for a bit, then thought I was skirting the left side of the great green glob. Instead, I had plunged right into the middle of it. Boy was that unpleasant! And slow.. Finally, finally out to the trail, ran along it for a bit, saw the stream and took that down to the marsh, easy from there.
7. Down the stream to where it was easy to cross the spur, and fairly easy.
8. Saw some other folks in the area, got up to the big trail and down to the slight bend and in.
9. Back out, and should be an easy trail run to 9, but my legs were dead and foot really sore, so just a shuffle. Or maybe just a walk. Anyway, no particular nav problem.
10. Also easy, not moving fast.
11. Not sure exactly how this worked. I believe I took the right fork from the trail, but it seemed like I was following a trail all the way to the control. Worked out ok, just a surprise.
F. Still seemed like I was on a trail until I got to the larger trail. Tony F was behind me. Struggling to keep moving, but he was motivation to not just stop and walk.

Probably as lost as I’ve ever been in the hunt for #2, then some trouble at the end trying to find a trail which I seem to have crossed, and very sore feet legs and back by then.

A run characterized by some grave difficulty in following a compass line, and also an inability to see things on the ground that were on the map.

Took George and Leslie to Sessions for a bit of training. Leslie did the brown course, George, who is recovering from a knee injury did the white and streamered the control locations. I did the brown in reverse order, encountered Leslie mid-way between 3 and 4. Took a hard fall leaving the start-finish area. Stepped on a wet rock and my foot slipped right out. Hit my back on the rock, lower R side, and my R elbow, but fortunately did not hit my head. Bruised and scraped, but no structural damage. Other than that uneventful. Hung a streamer on #11, moved a couple of streamers. Took a side trip to check out a green control site. It was raining off and on, and even with my Tony Muffatti special glasses I was pretty fogged up by the end. Awarded myself 10 points for picking up a mylar balloon between 8 and 7.
