Training event at Cemetery Hill. Nice course by Phil. Rain threatened but didn't arrive. I rode up and back with Bill. Some of the speedier guys went by at a good clip, but no problems other than that.

I was pretty curious about Ken's track workout the other day and wanted to try it out. Figured I could do at least 2x200 and at most 6, probably 4 would be reasonable, but by the third one I was sensing some pre-DOMS and decided to back off. Anyway, reasonably successful, 42.9, 42.6, 41.6. I was losing my usual gracefulness by the second half of the last one.

Definitely something to be tried again.

Long distance race at Camp Shea. Not really long, only 3.3K, but felt kind of long because of all the undergrowth. Pretty thick a good part of the way. No real trouble navigating, but some slow and winding routes. Best was probably the first one, long leg with a lot of climb, a lot of thick stuff, hit it right on. 2 was fine, then tried to go over, but ended up going more around to 3, so lost a fair amount of time to people who did one or the other. 4 was a long leg through fairly clear woods to a trail and then in from an attack point. 5, 6, 7 relatively short, no real problems, then 8 would have been much better to avoid climb, but I did all of it. Took a hard fall leaving 8, but no damage, then a little wobbly going to 9. Saw the stream, but had a hard time believing I was on the right side of it instead of the left. The stream didn't lie. Through the start area on the way to 10. Generally a pretty good performance for me.

Looking at the splits, I had one fastest leg split over the course of the weekend, and was surprised to find it was #1 on the long. Tough, physical leg, just the kind I would ordinarily expect to get in trouble on. But I maintained a pretty straight line, kept in good contact and ran right into it.

West Point Brown middle. Walking to the start my contact lens was feeling a little weird, but was generally in place. It flipped out of place about the time I turned my map over, so quite a hard time navigating. Got to the right place on top of the cliffs at 1 and looked over but didn’t see the bag, but also couldn’t make out any of the surrounding area so started to wander. Then just slow, straining to try to see something. My eye was pretty irritated by now and tearing, so not much use for distance, either. Anyway, missed the good road route around to 7, had a lot of trouble getting through the rocks on the hillside, and then as I was approaching 7 the lens flipped back into place, so ok for the rest of the course. The big problems were on 1, when I got there, but didn't see the flag and lost confidence because I couldn't make out what else was on the map, and 7 where I slogged through the awful rock field instead of the nice road route around. Otherwise I hit things pretty much ok, despite the vision issues.

Sprint race at Trophy Point. This was quite fun. I had resolved the morning's vision problem by digging out the contact and re-positioning it. Started out fine, and kept clicking along. A little hiccup at 10 when I ran through the tunnel to a bag that wasn't mine and then looked at the map to see I had to be on the wall at the left of the tunnel exit. 10 seconds lost at most. Still doing fine until 15, reading things well, making good plans, mostly focused. Then the wheels just came off. Took the 3rd best route choice, and then just got tired. When I got across to the parking lot I punched the first bag I saw, didn't even check the code. Then wandered around a bit because nothing looked right. Thought about going back and checking the code, but didn't. Then headed off to 17, but got lazy and didn't check the clue, went inside the garage instead of out and around. Lucky to finish at all. Anyway a well-deserved mispunch, but a fun course, with the interesting and strange finish circle inside a building. What was that all about? Finish on the indoor track! Brilliant.
