With Rhonda from Pleasant Valley. AOWN at the 2 mile mark: 3 bald eagles, two adult and one juvenile, flying up the river. One of them stopped and perched in a big pine tree.

L hamstring and R foot very painful. Slow as this was, I certainly didn't feel like going any faster.

Green course at Pond Mt, set by walk. Beautiful day, lovely woods. Reading the map very well and hitting them right on, but moving slowly - injuries and the fear of falling on sharp rocks when going downhill in slippery leaves. A very fine time. Nominal distance 4.8 K. A few around routes to minimize climb. Stayed off the road from 9-10, in deference to the beautiful woods.

Gym 10:00 [3]
slept:5.75 weight:163.2lbs

mini workout on my own, out in the gym. Decided that some Romanian deadlifts might be good for my ailing L hamstring, so 5 rounds of 10 RDLs, 10 GHD situps. Just used 45#, which was pretty easy. Testing it out. I can try more next time, maybe day after tomorrow.

cycling (Spinning bike) 30:00 [3] 6.6 mi (4:33 / mi)
shoes: 2011 gel kayano

With Rhonda in the gym. Niggling little strain in R quad, so quit at 30 min.

slept:6.75 weight:164.2lbs shoes: 2012 merrell trail glove

Turned out the same as yesterday, but I am beginning to think this is not that great an idea. I think it is over-stressing muscles that are trying to compensate for my shoulder injury. Maybe the stationary bike is the next thing to try.
10 AM

cycling (spinning bike) 45:00 [3] 10.0 mi (4:30 / mi)
shoes: 2011 gel kayano

With Rhonda in the gym. Trying to find things to do that don't cause more trouble.

Note

Had a nice conversation with a tree clean-up crew from Missouri, here to remove a pretty dramatic broken tree tangled up with the power line across the street. This was about a 20" diameter ash tree, midway between utility poles. At some point, someone had thought it was sturdy enough that it was a good idea to put a bolt into it and secure the power line to it with a cable. During the storm it broke near the base, and fell into an adjoining oak tree, about half-dead itself. Upper branches were very intertwined, and many were broken. They had showed up at about 8 or so this morning, and I watched them for about 45 minutes before having to get back to the house. Fascinating chess match as the guy in the bucket moved around to different parts of the top, extracting branches with one of three different saws. Unfortunately, I missed the exciting part. The last cut was apparently pretty dicey because of the loads and forces in the way the broken tree was leaning on the other one. When it was finally cut loose, it sprung sideways and gave the operator a good scare. He was still calming down from that when I got back down at noon, and they were getting ready to go. Nice guys, curious about Connecticut. We talked about deer and bears and hunting. Stuff like that. Very capable guys.

Rowing Machine 13:40 [3] 3.02 km (4:31 / km)
slept:7.5 weight:161.4lbs shoes: 2012 merrell trail glove

A little slower, trying to ride the edge of where the shoulder discomfort gets a little sharper. I think I pushed too much last time and I was relatively more achy for a couple of days. This seems to have been ok. I could go a little faster as I warmed up more. I could feel the pinch if I got below 2:16 in the first 1000, but by the end I could get closer to 2:10.

Note
slept:6.0 weight:161.6lbs (injured) (rest day)

Legs feeling a bit better after massage yesterday, but not enough to go running. We went out this morning with the dog on a CCW dog walk loop, in honor of the hurricane. Storm turned out to be not much of an event up here. The roads are another matter. Lots of downed trees, a couple hanging on wires. Not sure how we managed to keep power. I assume at some point they'll have to shut it off for a while to remove the trees. I came across a couple of downed trees on the property, trees that weren't in particularly fine shape to begin with.

A bit faster. Shoulder still really sore, but obviously calming down a bit. Still worse than when I did the original injury about a month ago.

Note

Heather, my massage therapist, says my R shoulder looks quite different from the L, presumably indicating some pretty major trauma in there. MRI on Sat, follow up with the doc next week.
