Orienteering 1:02:09 [4] *** 5.9 km (10:32 / km) +165m 9:14 / km
spiked:12/15c

Day 1 US champs green course at Diamond Bay. Best day of the week physically so far, and very good navigation the first 6 controls. Then drifted right off the map onto a parallel feature and lost about 6 minutes on #7. Drifted a bit also on #9 and lost another 2. Ron Hudson caught me somewhere in the vicinity of 9, since I saw him ahead on the way to 10, but I punched 10 and 11 before him, before he ran away from me. I was generally encouraged to do as well a s I did, particularly on the difficult legs 4 and 5, both of which I spiked.

Orienteering 51:02 [4] 5.4 km (9:27 / km)

Green Course, Pelican Bay East. Better legs than yesterday. Lost some at the end when I had too much sweat on my glasses and missed some things on the map.

Orienteering 24:36 [4] 2.53 km (9:43 / km)

Sprint course at Pelican Bay East. A little woozy at the start, but walked some and then could jog. Same problem with sweaty glasses. Will wear a contact tomorrow.

Orienteering 1:40:00 [3] 6.9 km (14:30 / km)

Red course at Happy Jack

Orienteering 1:07:00 [2] 3.9 km (17:11 / km)

Afternoon training at First with the Most, following a course by George Minarik selected from the many control circles available.

Orienteering 1:01:51 [4] 6.3 km (9:49 / km)

one man relay at Jubal E Springs, mass start, four loops. Part walk, part slow jog. Having a tough time with elevation. That said, a pretty fun event. First three loops were essentially the same, just with different controls.

Note

Some pretty fine rogaine practice post-O with the Goodwins. Mr. Goodwin the younger is amazing to behold. Very long, very skilled. The usual mixture of pretty good and ridiculously bad shots, but got better as things went on. Very tired feet and back by the end.

Followed by a pleasant dinner with the BAOC folks in attendance, and a little adventure involving Rachel Care's dental hardware.

Orienteering (training map) 1:22:00 [2] *** 6.5 km (12:37 / km)
spiked:12/13c weight:161lbs

Plains of Despair training exercise, controls 1-9, 15-18. Could only run a few steps at a time, but navigation fine. One thing I hadn't counted on, but of course it makes sense - blisters. Hadn't had blisters in quite a long time, but it has now been a long time since I did any real running and my feet are apparently tender, or at least the right one is.

AOWN #1 Headed for #8 which was guarded by 11 black cattle who seemed way too interested in me, so pulled up short and went around.

AOWN #2 on the way to #15 saw a buck muley with a big rack driving a coyote ahead of it. Pretty interesting.

Gym 50:00 [3]

morning class, well attended today, and taking a break to do therabands for my shoulders

cycling 1:19:00 [3] 19.2 mi (4:07 / mi)
weight:163lbs

Up Sandy Brook a ways and then back, with Kathleen & Rhonda. Kathleen has been trying to beat me at the end of these rides, and generally puts the hammer down with about a mile and a half to go, which makes her pretty easy pickings in the last 200 or 300 meters. Of course, when she puts the hammer down any earlier than that, I don't have the resolve to chase her.

cycling (group ride) 3:25:00 [3] 50.9 mi (4:02 / mi)
weight:162.5lbs

Tour of the Litchfield Hills, with Rhonda and Kathleen (and a few hundred others). Plenty of hills, as advertised. Nice that the last 10 miles was all flattish to downhill, as the hill up into Norfolk really took it out of me. Beautiful day, beautiful course. I could really feel the thrusters from yesterday.
