walking (bathurst tourist) 40:00 [1] 2.0 km (20:00 / km)

from Mineral Museum to Art Gallery and return.

The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum is a world-class collection of mineral specimens, which started as the private collection of Warren Somerville more than 60 years ago. Knowing how much effort time and frustration can go into getting one good geological specimen, to see a collection of thousands of superlative specimens is a treat and a pleasure.

After the fantastic minerals and fossils the Art Fair at the Gallery was very ho-hum - nothing that I wanted to have hanging at home, compared to so much.

orienteering warm up/down (to start) 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km) +5m 14:38 / km
shoes: HH2+crutches

worried I might miss my start so had to hurry - didn't really help my preparation for start, and may have contributed to messing up first 2 controls ultra-big time
10 AM

orienteering race (Aus Long) 2:07:14 [4] *** 3.4 km (37:25 / km) +40m 35:21 / km
shoes: HH2+crutches

Aus Long Course 17 (M65AS) nom distance 2.0km at Tambaroora, Hill End

major errors on first 2 controls 34min & 30min - into gold mining detail without being absolutely certain where I was starting from, and paid penalty as I tried to make the area around me fit with what I could see on the map. In both cases finally recovered by getting right out of mining detail, relocating properly, and then navigating around edge of mining to control - the sort of thing I had planned to do initially, but executed without any care.

First two controls were made worse because I could hear the 1min beeps on the start clock until after I left #2 - at least 65 of them!

Rest of course went well, carefully planned and executed, with almost no time lost - but didn't make up for 50min lost on first 2.

Ended up 2nd finisher in class - one other finisher, 1 DNF, and 1 DNS, so take home a placing - made sure I waved the crutches in salute at presentation!

tinytoes 3rd, in same oresentatation group, so hugged at cenrte stage.

Note

LIDAR presentations at CSU - well attended and good range of topics/presenters. As second last on the program was glad I structured my presentation as "what we are doing in NSW' rather than more technical (no images of planes flying, laser reflections, or vegetation profiles) Also gave a good pl;uig/lead-in for Spatial Services - the free availability of LIDAR and other spatial data in NSW is best in Australia - a few from other states sounded either envious or frustrated.

orienteering race (Aus Middle) 1:06:14 [4] *** 2.6 km (25:28 / km) +60m 22:50 / km
shoes: HH2+crutches

Aus Middle Distance, M55AS, course 12 ( nominal 1.8km) at Hill End

entered M55AS to get a bit more "map time" than M65AS (course 13 1.3km) as I haven't pre-entered mid-week events. Enjoyed the area and course, although had to be careful on "rolly" gravel on tracks early in course - one fall when tripped on very thin branch on ground that didn't break when I stepped on it!

very careful with route choice not to get caught on wrong side of big steep gullies - generally worked well except for approach to #8, where I could see water bottles at control (but not flag) but had to go round end of water-course in 1m deep ditch - too wide to step across & just deep & steep enough to be very awkward.

#6 half a contour too high - could see feature but had to scramble down steep slope & bum-slide to get to control.

Big mistake at #9 - in control circle and totally misinterpreted combination of mapped vehicle track and unmapped old vehicle track - noodled around for 5 minutes before returning to same spot, went 5m further and all fell into place as blindingly obvious.

to last control wondering what man-made feature would be, so decided to extend control by looking for marshy ground beyond it - till I saw the 3m high stamper battery and did't have to worry about an indistinct marsh.

almost hit parkrun pace (12min/km) around finish loop so felt tired but happy with effort after finish.

orienteering race (Aus Sprint) 42:32 [4] *** 2.4 km (17:43 / km)
shoes: HH2+crutches

M65A course 5, at CSU Bathurst

before start expected about 40min time - 42:32 was result, without any significant mistakes or bad route choices - very happy with effort and navigation.
