Orienteering race 2:01:35 [4] **** 10.3 km (11:48 / km)
shoes: Dads Helly Hansons

long at belanglo
firstly i was pretty annoyed at the map printing, everything was blurry and you couldn't see half of the features. was even more annoyed when i saw the clear 1:10000 version with huge features. man i would have given so much to run on the 1:10000 version.
anyway so i started well. oscar caught me from 2 mins behind at number 4, but i was able to hold him off until number 7, where i overran slightly and was looking in the wrong cliff bands, classic alex. lost around 6 mins here which was frustrating because oscar got away, plus we had caught kas and oliver crosato who had started in front of us and they got away too while i was looking in the wrong spot. then to control 9 things started to go really wrong. i was finding it really hard to read the map and i lost contact really badly. didn't see the track i was hoping to hit and couldn't make anything fit. stopped just above the control in the right watercourse but had no idea where i was, couldn't make the massive rockface behind me fit anywhere on the map. eventually i realised that i was right and cautiously came down into it. but was really rattled by this, lost another 5 mins or so and was losing confidence in my navigation. lachy went flying past me like i was standing still on this leg. was very very cautious the next 2 legs, trying to get back into it. josh went through me here too. then to 12 i got close, probably within the control circle, then lost confidence and spent a while trying to make sure i was in the right spot, which i was. had a big drink, a couple of deep breaths at 12 and tried to restart my course. this worked for 3 controls, i was taking it really slowly and carefully though, still not confident with my nav. then in the vague green on the way to 16 i got disorientated and lost contact again. looking back this was really stupid because i actually came out where i wanted to but on the day i wasn't sure which gully i was in. picked up a track, ran along til i relocated ( which was way off to the left of the control) and came back into it. another 5 mins lost and my confidence was completely shattered. nearly considered coming in then because i was convinced i couldn't even navigate anymore. took it veryyy slowly and carefully and managed to get round into the last loop, although was majorly hesitating on every control and losing time because of it, although my goal at that point was to finish. which i did eventually.
really really really disappointed with my navigation, struggled to hit controls cleanly this weekend and got completely lost. i'm not sure what to do from here because i've pretty much lost a lot of confidence in my navigational ability. and somehow i managed to roll my ankle with my ankle braces on :( i guess a positive from the w/e was that i felt pretty good physically and pulled up well from the sprint/middle.

Orienteering race 20:31 [5] *** 3.4 km (6:02 / km)
shoes: Nike Free 5.0 v4

sprint at macquarie uni. pretty good except for bad exit direction out of 6 meant i went along the wrong building and lost about 40 secs. then when i tried to go along a road it was closed and i had to go another way, 10 secs lost there. was best run of the w/e, came 6th

Orienteering race 54:00 [5] ***** 4.8 km (11:15 / km)

middle at wattle ridge
started well, taking it cautiously but nailed the first 2. hesitant on 3, oscar caught me up here from starting 2 mins behind. got onto the open area and ran too far along and ended up on the wrong spur for 4. oscar got away from me through the next couple and lachy went straight through me as well around number 6. was dodgy to number 8, was practically right on it but was unsure and stood around for a while trying to make things fit, then i took a few steps and there it was, so lost some time there. was good until 12, where the short legs caught me out. was relying too much on my compass and my compass work isn't great. so ended up way off on pretty much all of these controls to the finish, which was really annoying. was probably losing between 30 secs to a min on every control, and there was about 7 left so it really added up. biggest mistake late in the course was 17 where i ended up well and truly off to the right and had to relocate to the track. so wasn't happy at all.
updating the score board - wattle ridge 3, alex 0

shoes: Nike Lunarglide+

warm up and down
only 5 for warm up, was racing against daylight and wasn't sure if i would have enough time

Running intervals 21:30 [4] 4.98 km (4:19 / km)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide+

so after a bad night sleep my alarm went off at 5:30 and i pretty much turned it off and went back to sleep. luckily i managed to get away from uni a bit earlier and instead of getting home in the dark i got home just before sunset.
so tried some fartlek, 1,2,3,2,1 with equal recovery. originally there was going to be 2 x 3min surges but again i didn't have enough daylight. plus this old bloke started chatting to me as we ran around about how he was training for a 10km run and how he was 65yrs old and i didn't have the heart to cut him off. so my 3min recovery blew out to 6 mins. pushed extra hard on the last 2 to make up for it.
