Note
(rest day)

Lots of walking around in Budapest today, my legs feel fairly destroyed. Might go jog the synthetic running track around the island tomorrow though

Orienteering race 35:44 [5] *** 5.3 km (6:45 / km)
shoes: Inov8 x talon 212 #2

Relay, 2nd leg. Really fast but some big hills in there. 2 small mistakes though, close to a minute lost on each. Caught teams up though which I was happy with. Solid run by all the Aussie boys!

Orienteering race 28:33 [5] **** 3.9 km (7:19 / km)

Middle C final, 9th. Only one control where I was off and that was after the run through where my direction coming out could have been better. Would have lost time being super cautious and hesitant but I did what I had to do. Probably would have liked to be a little higher seeing as it was C but oh well. 2nd leg in the relay tomorrow with kas and

Weather was very different than last week, was cold and raining. But the sun came out for the A final and it was awesome spectating and being there to see Matt win.

Middle qual. Terrible run. Wasn't in a good frame of mind before I started and everything fell apart badly from control 6 to 12. Just couldnt handle the terrain. In C final tomorrow. More of a write up later

Ok so I wasn't feeling too well this morning, not sick but I felt really mentally fatigued and slow, didn't feel like I was processing anything fast. Tried to motivate myself up but out on the warmup map I felt like I was moving poorly and I couldn't hit any of the controls cleanly, didn't feel like I was processing the map quickly or well. Pretty much broke my confidence before id even started. Tried hard to shake it off and felt a bit better about things on the start line in race mode. On route to 1 was doing fine then fell into a marsh that just looked like grass and got my map and compass completely covered in filthy smelling mud. Quickly wiped it off but lost confidence again and slowly picked my way into 1. Hesitant into the next few but really got them pretty well. Then to 6 I drifted and lost contact, lost time relocating. Then 7 which was so easy off a track I stuffed due to poor exit direction out of 6, was dragged more from where I had come when I had overrun the control. Really tried hard to restart from here and focus on my process but seemed to be off in the next few controls. Off to the right everytime too, don't know why. Went straight to 12 but got caught in thick stuff and lost more time. The last few controls were less tech and I got them well, but the damage was done. Disappointed with how I handled things, but hopefully things go better tomorrow (I seem to be saying that every night this week)

Orienteering race (Jwoc long) 1:40:10 [5] **** 11.5 km (8:43 / km)
shoes: Inov8 x talon 212 #2

Jwoc long, 95th. 10th starter and was an early start to the day, was on the bus to pre start at 6:30am! Slept a bit on the bus then warmed up, had a gel, red bull, etc the usual. Fairly warm even that early in the morning ( the sun does rise at like 4:30am though).

Slow start, building into my race as usual. The terrain was all negative, with giant closed depressions to negotiate. Vegetation varied with about half the course in really fast white, some in light green, slower and a lot reduced visibility, and the other half in a mixture of either bright orange and dark green. Started in the white and was moving well early. Very long leg to 4, I tried straight, picking my way round depressions, got slingshotted off a few but corrected straight away, just ended up running a little further. Towards the end of this leg we entered the lightish green section and I made the mistake of leaving the tracks, and bashed slowly through some thick stuff. Not many controls in light green area ( had a drink and gel at 5) and the out to the open/dark green area. Sun was blazing down here and it was so warm with no shade. Had the looping section here and was still feeling ok, had even caught some people, although I never got lead into any controls. Getting ready to come back to the pivot/drink/ my next gel location and it all came unstuck.

Exit direction was probably slightly left coming out of the control and ended up running through the wrong depression gap, saw Brodie going the other way and got a little excited as he didn't seem too much further than 8mins in front. Bashed down to where the control should be, popped up the other side, damn this doesn't match. Realized I shouldnt have seen brodie as he was coming from a different angle from his control, and relocated. Tried to come in again but visibility was low and I was unsure. Relocated again, yep I know where I am, come in again, damn where's this control?! Relocated a 3rd time to a hill top, pretty much walked in this time and finally got it. Really frustrated as I'd already visited this control, and it was a manned drink station so there was even people hanging around it to make it more obvious. And I'd been so close to it the 2nd and 3rd times! 9 mins lost. Took my gel and drink and tried to restart.

Rest of the course was fine but I slowed down a lot due to overheating and being over cautious to not make any more mistakes. Relieved to finish, would have been so happy with my time minus that mistake. Ah well. Rehydrated, ate, had a cold shower and watched the rest of the day. Very different conditions for the last start block as a storm came over and they had cold rain to deal with instead of 30 plus temperatures! Was a good course though and fun terrain. Rest day tomorrow and then to try my luck at nailing a middle

Orienteering race 16:58 [5] ** 2.9 km (5:51 / km)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide+ 3 (blue)

JWOC sprint, 114th out of 180. Not a very hard course, and very quick. I'm not very trained for speed at the moment and I struggled with speed. Nav was fine early on and I was very smooth. However later in the course I felt sick and I missed a few alleyways, slowed down a lot, splits showed I lost a lot of places late in the race. Was worried about a DQ where I accidentally put a foot wrong but seems to be ok. Felt really calm and ready at the start, and in quarantine didn't feel too nervous so was happy with that. Very early start in the long tomorrow (9:19am, 5:19pm AEST) but happy to be getting it over and done with in the cooler part of the day.

On the sprint model, just cruised around trying to be smooth with my technique and running. Happy with the result. Tomorrows start time is 3:50pm (11:50pm AEST), pretty excited. Interesting to see that Brodie is starting 2 mins behind me! Opening ceremony tonight
