Walking 35:00 [2]

The usual route with a very unusual day--temps of 70+ degrees with an eventual high of 82! Wooooooeeeeeee! Stayed outside all day working in the yard. Tomorrow's high is 37 degrees, so I wanted to soak up the sun and heat today. Pooped.

Orienteering race 1:06:57 [4]

West Point Lake Frederick Black & White Cap Mpuntain map. Had a pretty good day. Too high on #2 but figured it out quickly. Trail to #3. Planned to take trail to 4 till it ended the head up the reentrant but could not make sense of the map at the end of the trail. I co it used another 30-40 meters but the terrain ahead of me did not make sense either. Decided to head up the reentrant closest to the steep slope with the cliffs and figure it out when I got up higher. The flat at the top is easy to read now, but if did not think I was there at the time. I proceeded very slowly trying to match map to terrain, then I saw the marsh, then the rocky slope and when it became cliff-like, felt things finally matched the map. Very grateful to find the control at the end of the cliff. Controls 5-8 were where I expected them to be. I almost missed #9 even though I ran past it and scoped out my route to it on the way to #6. Luckily, I stopped and looked behind me. Phew!

I had seen the rocks of #10 on the way to #6, so I went pretty quickly to it. I thought it was good course setting to give you the chance to scope out later legs if you chose routes that allowed that. I was proud of my route to #11, recognizing that I could contour around and stay high instead of going straight and encountering more climb. The trail leading to the control was sweet.

#12 was easy and I saw the route to #13 using the stream, but wanted the no-brainier of the road instead. Janet T took the stream route and I think that was probably the better choice due to all the climb I had at the end of the leg.

No juice at the end, just slogged down the road to the finish. Loved the course and the terrain.

Orienteering race 1:04:01 [3] 4.5 km (14:14 / km)

West Point Lake Frederick. Good race. One booboo near the end. First time in the woods this season so I took it easy and was able to find the controls easily. Not much stamina though. Beautiful day and happy to be in the woods.
