Orienteering race 1:21:51 [4]

Long Distance Race at NAOC. Screwed up #3 royally. Still not sure what I did. My fault. Lost about 14-15 min.

Later, on #12, I had a second big mistake, this one I'm blaming on the mapper. A stone wall, if ruined should be distinctly shown as a row of parallel offset black dots, not a faint scattering of tiny dots. I was about where I thought I was when I encountered a stone wall, clearly a stone wall, with a boulder at the end, and a marker. I decided to pinpoint my location using this feature, but there was no stone wall on the map that I could see anywhere near me. That threw me and my confidence was shaken. I continued with my plan to run along the base of the big hill, keeping an eye on the linear marshes. I decided to run through the marshes to make sure I encountered the place where the marsh crossed the stream. When I found that, albeit a meager stream, I was shaky but thought I should look for the hill where my marker should be, blah, blah, blah. Ten minutes later, after two relocations, I finally zeroed in on the control. Had I not seen the wall, which was mapped with a scattering of dots which did not look like a ruined stone wall on the map--it didn't look like much of anything--I'd have just continued on my route. Grrrrrrrrr!

Once again, some great splits, but a bad control (or two) to ruin the run . .
I did enjoy being out there. Wish I could do it over again.

Orienteering race 1:09:41 [4]

NAOC Middle Distance. Crapola. Was having a great race until I got distracted on #5 and lost track of my precise location. Missed the control, spent a couple of minutes looking for it and ran into a cliff out in the open with a control on it. I tried to use it to relocate. According to my map, during the rain and fog), there was only ONE small cliff in the area. From there, I should have been able to find my control about 100 m away, but alas, no control. 28-29 minutes of searching later, and having found 6 other controls, I finally came upon my #6 and backtracked to #5. I was annoyed with myself--until this morning when I discovered, under good lighting, that the course printed the "5" right against the OTHER cliff in the open area. OHHHHHHHHH, there was ANOTHER cliff. I just couldn't see it on the map. No wonder I couldn't relocate. Real bummer.
