Oceania Middle Distance Champs

Into the swamp straight after the start triangle and thigh deep mud, at least I didn't lose my shoe in the swamp. Went OK to #1 & #2 then a big parallel error and a 7 - 8 minuute time loss and some motivation lost.

Slip and slide around the rest of the course.

Oceania Relay

M55-65 Team with Noel and Bruce Bowen with me 1st off.

Soon lost the fast guys at the front of the pack, Warren Key was around 20 minutes quicker than me over the 4.0km course!

Made an error at #4 and had to search around a bit for the right knoll also hit the wrong control site at #11 so lost 3 minutes or so overall. Legs were slow towards the end over the sand dunes.

Team result was 14th about half way

Oceania Long in the Woodhill forest

Found the 1st control reasonably Ok, but then 30 minutes for #2 which should have been about 1min 30sec! Could not work out the contours, seemed to find much steeper slopes on the ground that what I expected from the map.

Struggled through the rest of the course to #12 making smaller errors but still having trouble with matching the map and the ground.

Between 12 & 13 one of the Kiwi M65, Stan Foster who had overtaken me tripped over a fence and was looking pretty bad way and said he thought he had broken his arm. So I abandoned my course and helped him back to the track. Walked with him for a bit and then ran off to try and find a 4WD to rescue him. By time I got to the finish and found the paramedic Stan had made it to the car park and was being looked at by an orienteering GP who confirmed the break to his humerus and probably a dislocated shoulder.

First time in 40 years orienteering I have had a good excuse to DNF!
