Orienteering 1:37:04 [3] *** 6.7 km (14:29 / km) +140m 13:07 / km

Another clean race! This course was definitely more technically difficult than yesterday. I had a couple of hesitation issues and a good number of "the control should be right here...oh, there it is"s. I got off my bearing a bit on one of the short legs, but I was caught by a trail quite quickly, so I didn't lose much time here. I slowed down on the technical legs and kept track of exactly where I was, which worked well. The only control I really had much time loss from the technical aspect was number 11. A lot of people converged at 10 and when everyone ran off to their various locations, I ended up moving faster than I had planned. I didn't keep as close track of where everything was as I had planned and wasn't 100% sure of my location coming into 11. I found the major reentrant and then found the small reentrant 11 was in after that. I lost maybe a minute or 2 here. I was then fine again until control 14. I saw the control and started running towards it. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but the next thing I knew, I was falling. I landed about 4 feet in front of the control with my knee on a rock. I lay on the ground in agony for 2 or 3 minutes before convincing myself that I was going to get up and try to finish the course. I finally got up only to have my leg buckle under me, so I waited a bit longer, and then started limping/limp-jogging off to finish the course. The rest of the course was clean, but I definitely could have run faster with both legs working. Since this was only an impact issue, I don't think I will have much in the way of lasting problems. Otherwise, this was a great run!

Red Day 1 at the Boulder Dash. This course was pretty easy and incredibly wet but fun. A lot of the best route choices involved taking trails/linear features a good chunk of the way. On the other hand, my goal for this weekend was to be clean, so this course definitely helped with that :-). The biggest problem for me with this course was just not being able to run fast enough. There were times when I was on trails when I felt like I should have been able to run faster, and I ended up walking some of the uphills. (Especially the long ones on the way to 8 and 9.)

Control 1 was fine.
Turns out the clear cut area on the way to 2, which looked pretty bad on the map probably would have been ok to run through, so I could have cut instead of taking the trail, but this did give me a nice solid attackpoint.
Control 3 was one of the more difficult ones, but we were attacking from a reasonably easy direction, so it was fine.
Control 4, I decided not to climb up 3 or 4 contour lines to take the trail just to come back down them again. I'm not 100% sure this was the best choice, but it did keep me off trails for this leg...
Control 5 was another trail run with a short jog into the woods at the end. Control 6 was the road crossing, so although not trail heavy, still pretty easy.
Control 7 was completely a trail run. I guess just to get us away from the road.
Control 8 was the first big climb up a huge hill. I definitely slowed down for the climb, but didn't have any problem finding the control.
Control 9 could have been difficult but there was a nice catching feature immediately behind the control (trail with a huge bend about 10m away), so I just compass beared up the hill to the control, ended up hitting the trail bend and came back to the control.
Control 10 was the first control I was worried about. I decided to be safe and come down to take the trail because I couldn't see a good attackpoint otherwise. The control wasn't all that far into the woods off the trail anyway.
Control 11 was another potentially difficult control. I followed the reentrant to a hill and then compass beared to the control.
Control 12 had a rock wall that ended nearby, so I came up above the control and looked for the end of the rock wall to head in to the control, which worked well.
Control 13 was a trail run in with Cristina right behind me. I managed to keep in front of her the whole way and into the finish.

A pretty clean run in the rain. I was definitely pleased with my navigation. I could use some work on speed, but maybe I wouldn't have been as clean then.

Overall not a very clean run, but I was moving pretty well most of the time. I lost about a minute to 1.5 minutes at control 12 and small bobbles at a couple other controls. I also had to wait for a Presto pit stop at one point. Nice to get out for the run!

Running 26:52 [3] 3.1 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 2

Easy run before lab with Presto. We ran from my apartment to the river and then did the JFK-River St. loop. My left shin is still hurting when I run on concrete. I feel like I am falling apart...bleh. Other than that, nice to get out!

Night-O at Pine Banks set by Ian. Pine Banks is a reasonably creepy park at night. I think it is a combination of being less familiar with the park, the amount of green stuff, and the voices. I guess there was a football game (or something) happening at the high school nearby and the announcer voice was audible in the park. This was disturbing because it was hard to tell if it was an announcer far off or someone close by talking. Anyway, creepiness aside, the first sprint went pretty well. I had a bit of trouble getting through the green in places, although not too bad and was generally being cautious so as to exit the park in the same state of health as I entered it.

CSU training Night-O number 2. I had been hearing Ross and/or Dean in the woods with some frequency during the first sprint, but they seemed to have disappeared by this point (apparently they had light issues), and I didn't want to make people wait too long for me, so I sort of approximated this sprint. I went to all the general locations of the controls, but didn't worry about finding the feature if it was too far into the green. I did keep close track of where on the map I was, though.
