Found out that Arrowhead had some trails (about 15km) still open and was closing after today so thought I would take advantage of another bluebird day to get a bit more skiing in. The trails had been groomed the day before but with the warm temperatures Saturday they were a bit of a mixed bag. I started early enough that some sections were still rock hard ice while other sections in the sun were mushy, but who cared! It was a beautiful day and I was happy to be out there exploring the trails. I started from the Birches parking lot and did a bunch of the green trails to see what the conditions would be like before doing the loop around Arrowhead lake and then a bit more green to finish off the morning. It was getting busy by the time I left but I only saw a couple of people out while I was skiing.
On Friday and Saturday night I stayed in the coolest place that I have to mention to anyone looking for some affordable and quirky accommodation in the area:
http://wolfdenbunkhouse.com/accommodation/hostel I absolutely loved the place and would not hesitate to stay there again. Both the rooms (I had part of a log cabin called Loon East), the owners, the main lodge and the people I met there were great.
So all in all, it was an incredibly fun and fulfilling weekend and I am glad my family gave me a holiday hall pass when I told them it was going to be too nice for me to stay in town for the weekend and that I HAD to go on an adventure. :-)
