Adventure Racing race 12:35:00 [3]

Angry Seagull with simpy, BiT and Hermes. Was looking forward to going up to Temagami for this race as I'd never been there before and hadn't done an Angry Seagull for several years but a bit nervous as I wasn't feeling as physically prepared as I'd like to be going into a 24 hour race.

We all met up just outside of Orillia to drive up together and the drive flew by as the hijinks and hilarity started right away. Stopped at Boston Pizza in North Bay to pick up dinner for later that night and for gear bin pizza during the race. Dumped our stuff at Temagami Shores and then headed over to the community centre for check-in. Stuck around to fiddle with gear, socialize and eat dinner before the pre-race briefing. Once we had the map and instructions, headed back to the hotel to organize gear while simpy performed his magic on the maps. He had ordered the new large Friends of Temagami map online beforehand (he's so smart!) which I think proved useful in plotting routes. Team got to bed just after 11 feeling pretty organized.

Set our alarms for 6 the next morning which was probably a bit early as we had too much time in the morning to loiter about and question our decisions. All race morning logistics seemed to go smoothly and we started just a couple of minutes after 9:30 on bikes. Bike-o section on some trails and then a long road ride to TA1. simpy and BiT were very generous with their towing offers but even still I was really feeling the heat by the time that we finished. Had put some ice and cold drinks in our TA bin which hit the spot at TA1.

Geared up for a loooonnnnnggg afternoon and evening of paddling (I think that this was the longest that any of us had ever paddled before). Had sorted out portaging logistics ahead of time which made for very efficient transitions in and out of the boat. Kept running into DD11 and 1L's team throughout the first half of the paddle and felt terrible that such a strong paddling team had such bad luck! Perfect night for paddling with a clear sky full of stars. We saw the Northern Lights from our boat and a couple of wicked shooting stars. Adrian and Carolyn were amazing CP4 hosts offering us coffee, filtered water and bug spray. Paddle was really enjoyable but both BiT and I found our backs were really sore by the middle of it to the point that we were looking forward to the portages.

Got into TA2 around 3:30 a.m. and had an efficient but relaxed transition. I was really glad that the trek was last as I was pretty worried about my Achilles going into this race and at least this way the potentially most painful part would be at the end rather than the beginning. It had held up well until midway through the paddle section when it started to niggle a bit. Everyone's spirits were still good when we started the trek and no one was really complaining about fatigue. I had my personal drama queen moment of the race when we crossed the river at the start of the trail heading over to CP6 and fell pretty hard, banging my knee, wrenching my thumb and exclaiming "I hate this trek already!" En route to 6 we ran into a rookie team who had been looking for the CP for 4-5 hours and we suggested they accompany us there. Decided to take a longer route around to avoid swimming but scrambling along the shore on the uneven rocks really sucked (for me at least!) so we decided to swim back. It was about 6:30 or so then but nice and warm and the swim felt great. The chafing that later ensued from wet unders and pants the rest of the trek - not so great!

simpy is one hell of a navigator and we had no trouble with 7 or 8. At CP8 we had just under 3 hours left and my leg was pretty painful at this point so we decided to go straight to 9 out on the road rather than go for the advanced CP. Not sure if we would have had time to get it or not but it might have been preferable to the death march in the open sun back on the road! Hit the finish just after 12:30 where DD11's awesome dad took photos of us (will he post those anywhere DD? He took lots!) and offered us cold drinks. We had a ride back right away to the Community Centre where I immediately went for my first beer in a whole week which tasted absolutely marvelous!

As always, the team makes the race and we had an absolute blast out there. There were tons of jokes, oversharing and great snacks. We may not have found Daniel, but we had a great time!
