Orienteering race 3:02:28 [3]
Snowshoe Raid with Mrs. Tiny. Using the experience of racing in this area in last year's event, we knew the key was not to spend too much time in Loree. We plotted a conservative loop hitting most of the CPs on the west side and gave ourselves a cutoff to make it to the first aid station by 12:40. We found all of the CPs we intended to hit without any trouble, minus a small snafu on 149 where we missed the trail we intended to attack it from and had to use the land features instead. From reading the other race reports, sounds like we were lucky to find this one! Hit the aid station about 15-20 minutes ahead of schedule and got 110 and 104 as we started on our route back.
From there we had workshopped several options depending on how our time was going. We thought we might get 160 but decided to keep going. After 178, we debated between going for 201 and 208 and then straight to the finish or going to the matrix and trying to get them all which would be worth more points. We opted for the latter and arrived the top of the matrix with about 40 minutes left, which we thought would give us enough time for all of them. We were wrong! I was able to grab A and B while Mrs. Tiny grabbed E (I think?). We both went right by C thinking the other person was getting it...oops! Met back at the top of the hill and tried our best to bomb down without breaking anything but were 2.5 minutes late.
Really happy with the first half of our route but in hindsight, should have probably opted for 201 / 208 on the way back rather than the matrix. Oh well! Perfect weather for and it so fun to see everyone in January!
