Running 30:00 [3]

Woke up early to get a short run in on the quiet morning streets of Granada to start doing penance for the fact that I have essentially been living on wine and bread here. Nice and brisk out and felt much better for it. Spent most of the day travelling to Madrid before the flight home tomorrow.

Trekking/Hiking 3:00:00 [3]

We set off on another one of Elma's routes today from Bubion to a another white village. There were less opportunities for her to take us off the beaten track this time, but she still managed to confuse us once or twice (it would have helped if we knew what a chestnut tree looked like). Gorgeous sunny day and the hike took us down into a canyon, across and up the other side, stopping at several cool places like the ruins of an old mill which was great for photos and several cool bridges going across the canyon. Had a nice lunch in Capileira and then hiked back. Elapsed time 5:15 as there were lots of photo stops today.

Trekking/Hiking 4:45:00 [3]

Bruiser and I are in an amazing little town in the Alpujarra mountains. After a great dinner last night (walnuts with honey for dessert, mmm!) we got up this morning and chose one of the trekking routes to do. The hostel that we are staying at has a ton of laminated trail "maps" so we chose one that said it would take 4.5 hours. We figured we could easily shave a hour or two off of that estimate, but that was before we learned about Elma...

Welcome to today's edition of "Exploring the Alpujarras" with Elma Thompson. Elma was gracious enough to draw a map for us but realized that hints like a scale, distances or identifying topographical features might just distract us. It's also more fun to draw not only all the trails she wanted us to take, but also those that we shouldn't take. Fortunately, she (and by she, I mean the pamphlet authored by her) complemented her map with a set of ambiguous directions, like this:

"look for an upturned stone on the right"

"The best way is to take a diagonal line towards the two cherry trees, scramble up witth the aid of one of these and then follow the wall upwards."

"Look for an old hunting sign on the right and then take the path on the left just beyond - hoofmarks may again help to identify this."

Bruiser and I took turns trying to interpret Elma's directions, and eventually we were successful. Along the way, we made both a video and some songs up about Elma. In the end, Funderstorm emerged victorious but Elma got the better of us a few times. We look forward to taking her on for another challenge tomorrow. Elapsed time: 6:15

Note

The company that we rode with last week has posted pictures on their website. A combination of the ones that they took and the ones on my memory card. We're in pictures 1-48 before the Danish invasion took place: http://www.sierracycling.com/imagegallery/2012-03-...
