Orienteering race 7:40:00 [3]
Mrs. Tiny and I teamed up for the Laurentian Rogaine and spent a wonderful weekend in the company of T. Rex and her highly entertaining and amazingly talented Finnish orienteering partner. We couldn't have asked for a nicer day to race - temps were perfect and the course was a ton of fun. Mrs. Tiny and I had a bit of a slow start as we adjusted to the map and the quality (or lack of) trails that were shown on the map, but after a few controls we hit our stride and kept up good momentum throughout the race. With only 25 minutes or so to work with the maps beforehand, we laid out a best case scenario route that we modified a few times on course, but in the end I think we were both more or less pleased with our route. The course was hilly with lots of controls on summits or hiltops but it was also really dry with lots of nice, open bush, and no devil's club or slide alder anywhere!
We came in with 20 minutes to spare but with no reachable controls to go out and get in that time, but it was better than the alternative of losing 10 points a minute for coming in late. We were really happy and pleasantly surprised to be second in the EF8 category. Awesome homemade soup and treats post-race, and draw prizes for practically everyone. A great event and a good opportunity to log some good hours on the feet and get a ton of orienteering practice in.
Other than the fact that the AC in my beloved Toyota Echo decided to be uncooperative on the way home today, it was a perfect weekend!
