Cape to Cabot race in St. John's.
What a cool experience! Started the race shrouded in fog at Cape Spear historic site (most easterly point in Canada). Nice downhill to start before the first of four major climbs on the course (only 3km of the course is flat). Since protocol (at least for people as slow as me) is to walk hills in ultras, I was definitely not as prepared for the long climbs on this course as I should have been.
Race didn't start great. Took me a long time to feel warmed-up and get going and I had some extreme tightness along the front of my right shin that wouldn't go away. Didn't start feeling good until about 9km or so, and loved the rest of the course. Even with the mile long climb up Signal Hill at the end I was able to pull off a negative split (about 1:09 for the first 10km, and 1:05 or so for the second half). Aside from under-cooperative lower limbs, I had a fantastic experience. The scenery was unreal, and the RDs did a fantastic job with logistics (bussing everyone out to Cape Spear, carting dry clothes to the end of the race, and offering free shuttles back into town). I was too impatient to wait for the shuttle so decided to walk back to my B&B before quickly packing up and heading to the airport!

One last note...from what I saw today, Salomon is doing very well out here in Newfoundland. I couldn`t believe how many jackets and tights I saw out there today...made me want to go up to everyone and say ``are you an adventure racer"? It was also wonderful to catch up with a guy who camed down to Mexico camp this past winter from St. John's and who was also running the race for the first time.
