Running race 6:24:00 [3] 50.0 km (7:41 / km)

Run for the Toad 50K.

Every year I have had my eye on this race but have always waited too long to sign up. When I saw that it was listed in Canadian Running as one of the top 10 trail races in Canada, I immediately signed up for this year's event. I can see why it was included on that list - the organizers really do an outstanding job with this race.

I ran a 50K three weeks ago, and was unsure how my legs would handle two in a month. I also wasn't sure how my mind would handle a four loop course, but surprisingly, I enjoyed seeing kilometre markers and knowing how far I had left to go.

My first lap was good and uneventful. My pace was moderate (1:24) and I was hoping I could keep this up for the rest of the laps. I should know myself well enough by now to know that I'm always going to slow down!

On laps 2 and 3, I was battling some GI issues that I've yet to encounter in an ultra. In a weird way, I was glad that I did have to deal with this as it gave me the opportunity to work through them. I couldn't make myself eat even gels, but knew that I needed to. I got through Lap 2 in 1:31, but Lap 3 was a gong show in 1:42 as I made 4-5 trips to the washroom and did lots of walking.

Going out for my fourth lap, I was in good spirits as I knew it was the last one! My stomach had settled, and I was feeling really good. I was able to knock a few minutes off my Lap 3 time and pass a few people along the way, which I was happy about. Although everything was tired and sore, this was probably the first 50 I've done where I felt as if I could have kept going....which is a good thing, since in 6 weeks, I'm running my first 50 miler!

My time of 6:24 is a ways off my PB for this distance, but my fastest so far this year. It was also 49 minutes faster than my Haliburton Forest time three weeks ago, although I suppose the courses don't really compare. In any cases, I was very happy with how the day went!

The weather added a fun twist to the race as well...as the day wore on, the course got wetter and muckier. It was laughable how much I was sliding around on the last lap, but my new shoes (which I wore against my better judgment) were fantastic, and on a few occasions, I was able to pass people on the downhills who were slipping all over the place.

Huge congats to Bash, who kicked ass in her 50K debut. She told me after the race that "I don't know that this is my distance," but I think that the results suggest otherwise!

Trying out my new Mountain Masochist shoes...loved 'em and am tempted to wear them on Saturday but hope that I know better.
