Running race 1:41:14 [4] 14.5 km (6:59 / km)
When Bash, 'Bent and I hiked through Mono Cliffs at the end of July, I couldn't believe I hadn't been there before. After deciding a couple of weeks ago to drop down to 50K at Oil Creek because of my achilles, in a fit of rage I signed up for a couple of other races instead. Yes, I know this might not make sense but it did to me at the time - if I couldn't run 100K in one race, I'd try to spread it out over a few weekends instead. At the last minute (last night), Mrs. Tiny decided to join me for Chase the Coyote this morning.
Weather couldn't have been better (except maybe a tad cooler) and the course was stunning at this time of year. We got there nice and early and hiked the first bit of the course so we could warm up and check out the first hill. Race started well enough, but I was a bit surprised when Mrs. Tiny and I were still together after a couple of km...oh crap, that definitely meant I was going to fast. My new Ambit, which I am still getting used to, confirmed it! Eeek...I should know better by now.
Felt good for the first 5km, a bit crappy for the middle 5km, and strong again at the end. I did a full body roll after tripping on a root at the top of the last hill which I imagine would have scored me at least a 9 from a Russian judge. As is often the case in races where I have other things to focus on and the adrenaline is going, the achilles kept itself to a dull roar and wasn't too distracting. We will see how it's doing tomorrow!
Had a lovely lunch on the patio of the Mono Cliffs Inn on the way home. I'd definitely do this race again - everything about it was great!
