Running race 1:41:14 [4] 14.5 km (6:59 / km)

When Bash, 'Bent and I hiked through Mono Cliffs at the end of July, I couldn't believe I hadn't been there before. After deciding a couple of weeks ago to drop down to 50K at Oil Creek because of my achilles, in a fit of rage I signed up for a couple of other races instead. Yes, I know this might not make sense but it did to me at the time - if I couldn't run 100K in one race, I'd try to spread it out over a few weekends instead. At the last minute (last night), Mrs. Tiny decided to join me for Chase the Coyote this morning.

Weather couldn't have been better (except maybe a tad cooler) and the course was stunning at this time of year. We got there nice and early and hiked the first bit of the course so we could warm up and check out the first hill. Race started well enough, but I was a bit surprised when Mrs. Tiny and I were still together after a couple of km...oh crap, that definitely meant I was going to fast. My new Ambit, which I am still getting used to, confirmed it! Eeek...I should know better by now.

Felt good for the first 5km, a bit crappy for the middle 5km, and strong again at the end. I did a full body roll after tripping on a root at the top of the last hill which I imagine would have scored me at least a 9 from a Russian judge. As is often the case in races where I have other things to focus on and the adrenaline is going, the achilles kept itself to a dull roar and wasn't too distracting. We will see how it's doing tomorrow!

Had a lovely lunch on the patio of the Mono Cliffs Inn on the way home. I'd definitely do this race again - everything about it was great!

Nice run along the Grand River Trail as the sun was going down.

Strength Training 40:00 [2]

Showed up to the gym at 5:45 to find out spin had been cancelled as the instructor was sick. Oh well...decided it was the Universe's way of saying I should do some weights instead since I swapped that out for biking yesterday.

Planned to do some strength training but had a frustrating day at work so went out for a ride instead. I don't think I'm meant to be kept indoors all day!

Took the Grand River trail to Victoria then roads through Breslau, across the bridge and hooked back up with the GRT to come home.

Felt slightly less frustrated once I was done!

Awesome morning ride with Mrs. Tiny at the Hydrocut. Trails were in great shape and the place was full of riders. Such a nice time of year to be out!

Lunchtime tempo run at the gym. Sad to have done this inside today but knew I was going to get sweaty and have no clean up facilities (and a 2pm meeting) at work. Had a morning of frustrating meetings and this definitely helped!

Running 30:00 [2]

Running around with the kids at ARK. Was thrilled to see the girls in my second group outrunning the boys, since the boys outnumber the girls about 8:1! :-)

I seem to be getting worse at yoga. Perhaps it's because I'm not going enough, but it certainly isn't getting any easier!

Running race 1:15:00 [3]

Rough guess at the amount of time spent running with Stephania during Beer Quest V.

Got clues at 12:00 and spent 15 minutes deciphering them and plotting a route. Since I don't know Toronto well, it is always fun to run through new neighbourhoods and see new potential watering holes!

Race allows you to use public transportation but oftentimes it was quicker for us to run, so we took one short streetcar ride and one subway ride but mainly stuck to foot.

Beautiful day for it and tons of fun...only disappointment was being a bit too hungover from a night of barrel aged beer tasting the day before to actually enjoy any beer!

The run bit.

Paddling 40:00 [3]

When running by the Grand River the day before, saw how ridiculously high the river was and wanted to get out on it as soon as I could!

Put in at Kolb Park and paddled to Freeport, then stashed my boat and ran back to my car along roads and the Grand River trail.

Weather was not particularly agreeable but really enjoyed the fast moving water and run felt good as well.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Luna Leadville

Lovely morning run in the fresh crisp air!

Have been rotating through the five pairs of shoes I've bought this year to see which pair are most achilles-friendly as Daniel has been a persistent fucker lately, rearing his ugly head on almost all my runs. The kicker...the only 'shoes' that allow me to run discomfort-free are my Lunas, but I'm not comfortable enough wearing them for longer distances. My chiropractor suggested this week that it may be because there is no heel cup to rub on the back of my heel. Intriguing, but not helpful!

If anyone is curious, these are the Luna Leadvilles: http://www.lunasandals.com/products/leadville-trai...

CX Works at the gym. Only tried this once before when it first came out and thought it was too confusing with all the fancy band moves, but this time was much better and I'm sure I'm going to be sore tomorrow!

Trekking/Hiking 7:30:00 [3]

http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fortwilliam/ringofs...

"Ring of Steall" in the Mamores section of the Charlie Ramsay Round just outside of Fort William. A bit of a later start than expected due to a few too many pints consumed out in the Fort the night before. Plan was to do what we thought were five munros in a horseshoe shape starting from Glen Nevis. Took a few hours to get from the parking lot up to the top of the first Munro - An Gearanach (982m). Some sketchiness along a ridge between that and Munro #2 - Stob Coire a' Chairn (981m) resulted in a minor tantrum as I definitely was on the edge of my comfort zone! Munro #3 - Am Bodach (1032m) was probably the toughest climb of the day and I was using my hands a few times to scramble up the side of the hill. The next hill - Sgorr an lubhair (1001m) used to be a Munro but apparently didn't live up to its potential and was now just a subsidiary top. From there, the route traversed the Devil's Ridge which saw another wee tantrum from yours truly when the trail disappeared and there was some rock hugging to continue along the ridge. The last Munro of the day - Sgurr a' Mhaim (1099m) was a beautiful climb from the Devil's Ridge. After the requisite summit pictures, it was a long descent back to the road and the van.

When we got back to Glasgow we watched the Charlie Ramsay episode of Boundless with a couple of beers. Remember watching that earlier this year and thinking it looked pretty epic and was just as amazing to see it in person! We had relatively good weather but high winds at the tops and could totally picture what the conditions were like when they were out there!

A few more Munros and the Tinto hill race planned for my next trip out there at the end of October.

Trekking/Hiking 1:10:00 [2]

Short trip to Scotland to watch Graham run up and down Ben Nevis and to climb a few Munros!

Hike from the race start up the Ben Nevis path until I saw the first runner come down and then I stopped and waited to take photos. While the route requires runners to hand in a card at the summit, once they do that, they can take any route they want down, which meant that while I was standing on the path, there were runners sliding all down the hills making their own routes! There were a few well worn shortcut paths by the time I was hiking back down.

Saw Charlie Ramsay of the Charlie Ramsay Round in the parking lot at Achintee on the way up and again on the way down. Thought I might have been mistaken but Graham confirmed it for me!

Running 1:55:00 [3]

Mrs. Tiny and I met up for a run during the hottest and most humid part of the day! Started from my place and did a route out to Chicopee and back along the Grand River Trail and the Grand Valley Trail singletrack as this seemed like an achilles-friendly route but sadly, he was still rather ornery for the latter half of the run. So frustrating!

On the plus side, we saw a deer bounding away through the woods and two baby snapping turtles that Mrs. Tiny identified and relocated out of harm's way as they were both right in the middle of the trail.
