Cycling 1:28:00 [3]

Road ride out to the butter tart place to pick up some treats for my godmother whose cottage we are heading up to for the day. On the way there, saw a runner wearing an Oil Creek shirt and yelled out to him. Had a nice chat - he's preparing for his first Badwater attempt in two weeks!

Glad I managed to get out before any rain came today, but very sad that my dead:live turtle sighting ratio was 2:1. :(

Note

Andrew and I spent the weekend at a slo-pitch tournament with his friends up in Apsley. Not really loggable but I can really get behind a sport in which day drinking is encouraged. Of course, we both managed to hurt ourselves (me left knee, him hamstrings) with the short sprints around the bases that we weren't used to! Couldn't do this every weekend but super fun once in awhile!

Event: ESAR

Adventure Racing 6:24:00 [3]

Super fun day at ESAR with Mrs. Tiny and Hermes. All of our pre-race prep and logistics worked out well and we planned to get all of the optional CPs available. Paddle went as smoothly as it could given that we are, at best, moderately average paddlers. Our goal here was just not to be last! Ran up to get our bikes and transitioned efficiently. Road ride went well - we knew we'd make up some of the positions that we'd lost on the paddle here and knocked off about 10 teams which felt good. As we were approaching Kolapore, I was surprised at how condensed the teams still were and knew this would be an issue once we hit the singletrack. We planned to approach the CPs counter-clockwise, which most everyone else was doing as well so there was quite a backlog leading up to the first two mandatory CPs. Once we hit the first two, we decided to opt out of the furthest optional CP and just get the closer one instead and then head out to CP2.

I was worried about my achilles holding up today so suggested sitting out the three optional trekking CPs at 2, so Mrs. Tiny and Hermes went on their own. They must have nailed them as they came out ahead of some of the teams that had started before us - nice work girls! Headed back out on the road to CP3 where Hermes managed to break a brake a couple of km from the CP. Got all of the optional CPs en route and in Beaver Valley with only a couple of minor mistakes. Knew we would have had lots of time to have gotten the other bike CP but no one was too concerned, especially since we knew it wouldn't affect our standing in relation to Bash, Dee and Mrs. Gally! Myka got a great shot of us in the ropes at the obstacle course (thanks Myka!), which was a silly but fun way to end the race. The most competitive moment for us all was the race to open the beer at the car which Hermes won! Those beers went down very nicely as we cooled off in the water before enjoying the sun and the BBQ.

Perfect weather, great course, AMAZING company and we were happy to come 2nd to the defending all female champions! :)

Running 44:00 [2]

Had an appt yesterday morning where my Chiro / ART guy tried some more aggressive treatments on my Achilles yesterday and said I could try running as long as it didn't hurt any more when I was running than when I wasn't, and if it didn't make things worse the next day. So as soon as I walked in the door I headed out for an easy trail run. I could certainly feel it when I was running but no worse than what I'm feeling when walking around most of the time, and this morning I was no worse off.

He suggested a consult / second opinion with a sports medicine doctor and also seeing a physiotherapist at the clinic who has access to different tools, so I've got that booked for next week. In the meantime, I'll be a much happier camper if I can even do a little bit of running - I miss it!

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Fun road ride with Mr. Reeder from our place to here: http://www.buttertartstodiefor.ca/index.html It was his bday yesterday and buttertarts rank highly amongst guilty pleasures. I'm not a big BT fan, but was proved wrong with the monthly feature: a peanut butter crunch buttertart. There was a big group of road riders from Durham who had biked there for the same thing. Fun mix of paved and unpaved road.

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

BodyPump class at Good Life. Didn't hurt as much after last week as I had expected, so I upped the weights on everything. Great instructor who motivated me to work hard.

Cycling 3:15:00 [3]

Super late in logging this and no need to repeat what my articulate teammates have already said! Biking portion of the BiT Memorial Adventure Race. Simpy planned a great route that felt exactly like the types of biking we see in a race. Lots of character building off and on the bike balanced nicely with rewarding super fun sections.

Trekking/Hiking 4:00:00 [3]

Sadly, even with two weeks off running my Achilles is showing no signs of improvement, so I asked the team if we could trek rather than run on this section which they were very obliging about (although simpy did yell at me once to stop being so weak). Once again, a super fun route was planned with plenty of training swatting and swearing at the bugs. Simpy's course would have been a great actual adventure race!

Paddling 2:00:00 [3]

Someone on the team must have been in a time warp because by my calculations we started the paddle 'round 5:30 and at 7:30 we were playing crazy eights in nana's cottage. :)

This was the adventure part of the adventure racing training! Lots of tricky portages to navigate but not as tricky as trying to stay upright in the canoe on the white caps! We definitely made the right decision to pull the plug on this one but it was too bad as I was looking forward to the paddle the most and the boys had gone to a lot of effort to haul two canoes up there. Ended the day as we began, with lots of laughs.
