Orienteering race 15:00 [5] 1.8 km (8:20 / km)

Mike and Julia put on a fun and fast O meet at Riverbend today. The weather cooperated and we had a solid turn out for an out-of-town event. Riverbend is one of my fav parks. It's small but offers a variety of veg, riverbottoms, open woods, funky cliffs, a waterfall and caves, boulders, and a cold storage ruin that they used to store meat and dead bodies in when the surrounding area housed a sanitarium.

I kicked off the day with the white/yellow to get in a good warm up. The course was 99% on trail and each control had a riddle pointing you to hidden candy or other tricks - like a skeleton with a MNOC jersey.

After my warm up, I was able to take off layers and ready to run Red in my jersey, arm warmers and a buff.

Orienteering 1:17:30 [5] 7.0 km (11:04 / km)

DUDE - I was having a solid run...until #13. Ugghh. The course was fast (lots of trail running). The nav wasn't too tricky and the lack of leaves and fall colors made it easy to spot the flags from the main trails. I focused on "thumbing" and looking ahead. As I attacked 13 from the stream/trail intersection, I knew I needed to go about 225 meters along the bank and then look for the clearing. Well I lost count and figured I'd gone too far. So I searched around a bit and then decided I needed to go back to the trail and try it again. After another min or two, I ran into Jim and Peter and ended up working with them to finally get it. I realized that I hadn't gone too far...but not far enough. Huge bummer for me because I had intentionally chosen a longer but safer route (trail/stream intersection) and relied on my pace counting which I'm good at (that's my job during adventure races). I need to work on pace counting and reading a map at the same time. At this point I was disappointed and ended up following Jim and Pete to 14. Pete shot ahead of us and over shot the control which was a challenging "bingo" control. Lucky for us, Jim and I ended up running right into it. I split from Jim and Pete on the way to 15. I hate following and I thought my route might be faster. I think it ended up being slightly faster but very close. The three of us pushed it in to the finish - sprinting to the final punch (snagged Andrei by 3 secs on the final control:) ).

Aerobics 45:00 [4]

I joined my mom for a FIT promo class at Macy's MOA. I didn't know what to expect but it was tough. I was sweating like crazy, my abs were burning and my hammies cramped. And I thought adventure racing was hard.
