Orienteering 1:10:50 [3] 8.8 km (8:03 / km)

NAOC Long. Overall pretty clean, with my mistakes occurring early on. About a minute on the first control. Very confused with the streams, as I crossed in a different spot than I thought. Damage minimized. Then again on 3, I was on track, but thought I was looking for the tiny formline reentrant and I inverted the contours. Ran so close to the control, and then bailed back to the top of the hill, reaffirmed where I was, and then was able to make sense of it all. About another minute 20 lost there.

After that it was good. I like the route I picked to 10, although I did hesitate in the middle of it, as I almost lost my way. Probably about another 45 seconds there. Then was slow climbing out of 12 and deciding a route (plus I took a gel), and Ali caught me there. Behind her on the way to 13, but then realized that Louise wasn't far behind us. That lit a fire in me and I stayed ahead of Ali from 14 to the finish (although only a few steps ahead!). Where was that speed and confidence for the rest of the race?

trail run 15:00 [2] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm up. A bit on the map. Cliffs are tiny.

Orienteering 34:40 [3]

North Americans Middle Distance. Took what I've learned from my recent races in Sweden and took my time, stopping when I felt unsure. This led to a chopping feeling, but also meant that I didn't really miss any controls. Started out and was worried about the first control, as it was just going along a bland hillside. Was too high and hit the control in the white woods above. Figured I must be there and ran down.

That was a shaky beginning, but things went ok after that. I don't really enjoy orienteering this way - lots of stop and go, but it worked to find the controls with minimal damage done. Maybe I can keep doing this but slowly get faster....

Third overall, second North American, about 20 seconds behind Ali and 2 minutes behind Emma Johansson.

trail run 15:00 [1] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm up. A bit on the map, and a bit getting lost with Cristina :)

Orienteering 40:00 [2]

Out on the model. A bit silly on my compass at times. Must watch that during the racing.
