Sydney Sprint Series: Fred Caterson Reserve

Knew I was probably going to struggle with the map on a 1:5000 sprint in the bush, and so it proved as I was quickly overrunning things, but I should probably have made more of an effort to compensate for this.

Overran path to 2 and had to bush bash losing 30-40s, and was slow through the bush to #5, was quickest or thereabouts through the easy stuff to 12 and then once back in the bush was terrible at both running on the needle, reading the map at speed, and actually running in terrain. Lost lots of time on #13, #15 and missing a path to #17. Pretty shoddy all round.

Nice ride out around the Royal National Park from Loftus, wet and muddy trails but really hot and muggy. Mainly firetrails, but did some of the singletrack near Loftus and found some nice trails/streams near Engadine. Lots of hills. Couple of old boys running up from Temptation Creek at a decent pace, respect.

Was planning a trip to Centennial, but left this way too late and constant rain would have made it slippy, so headed down to Sydney Park to take on the hills with tarmac underfoot and some lighting, which ended up being a really good session.

A continuous run, six times around a 1km loop that included 2 ascents of the biggest hill:

Nice and consistent after the first one, felt like the first decent session I've done for quite a while.

No idea of actual climb, Garmin corrected suggested 80m, uncorrected suggests 160m, and the orienteering map suggests around 240m (going up and over the hill with 4 tracks meeting, west of 9 & 10).

Arrived pretty late so didn't get much of a scan of the map beforehand, and took me a while to figure out which way was up and which was down once out and tackling the hills! Felt I was running reasonably quickly, just not picking a great route, and slowing towards the end where a few mistakes crept in and lost me a couple of minutes (and thus points). Good run out tho.
