QOC Long Day's Night - Hemlock Overlook Middle - Red (F-21+)

Beautiful open woods. Felt like I came out of the start moving well and flowed nicely through the first several controls, though the splits show I was really not that fast. Unable to determine where on the spur, so went slightly high at 6, seeing the black x (some kind of government monitoring station?!) and then came down to the control.

By number 9 I was thinking that this was all going quite well and fairly clean. So of course I screwed up 10. I came to the top of the spur by a huge rootstock, so headed to the right. I completely did not see that there was another rootstock on the edge of the circle, even with a big trunk marked. So I reached the end of the main ditch and went back. As I passed the rootstock again I realized my mistake.

Also got pulled over by a bag on the way to 12, even though it was totally on the wrong side... so I visited 4 a second time.

Aside from those two errors the rest was pretty good and I appreciated the nice terrain.

DVOA Brandywine (Mid-Atlantics) - Green

An OK effort until over halfway through, with 13 and 14 my undoing. I would likely have been second female only to Svetlana had I not mucked up there. And they should have been simple controls!

1, simple. 2, didn't notice the first trail I would cross in the green. Hit that thinking I was at the second trail and had gotten there awfully fast. Then wondered why there were so many rocks! Straight to 3. Muddled through the area with more/different unmapped trails between 3 and 4. Just kept moving in the right direction and eventually identified the river of rocks and climbed up the indistinct trail to the curve. 4,5,6 easy. 7, bounced off that curve in the trail again and was a little high.Maybe went too far N on trails on way to 8, had no trouble finding it up on the hillside where the contour bent.

Trail to the ruins and then cut in the white area to the S, had to bash through a little green stuff to the stream and 9. Took the high route to 10, passing through 11 on the way there, then easily back to 11 which was still visible from 10. Back along the high trail to the bend and then over to 12 staying along the edge of the steeper area.

Dropped down the hill, having to be careful of footing. Bad knee had started to complain at about #10 and was also not happy with this descent. Saw the control on the rock closer to the trail and went in to where I thought my bag should be, but was a bit too far SW. Back out to the other rocks, verified that I was where I thought, and got it on this second try. Up the hill, out the trail. Not a distinct enough attackpoint for 14. Thought I was cutting in from the little formline wiggle. Ended up missing and drifting SE to come back out on the trail by little cliffs. Attacked again from there and found it, then got in some yucky stuff on the way back to trail. And 15 and finish, no problem there, just not moving well anymore.
