Running warm up/down 5:00 [3]

ANGRY RUN!!! No offense to any UMD alums or staff (I'm thinking of Heidi) out there, but that university cannot do one damn thing right.

Context: I get my prescriptions filled at the university health center since the campus is between my home and work, but in order to do so I have to leave work a little early to make it to the pharmacy before it closes at 5pm. I always get grief from the pharmacist for showing up so late, but its the best I can do since I work full-time. I called in my refill today during my lunch hoping that that would make life easier for me and the pharmacy, but when I got there (4 hours later mind you) they still hadn't filled it...they actually said they had no record of my call. Since they were closing they refused to fill my prescription, even though they screwed it up and told me to come back tomorrow morning. Jerks!

I was so angry when I walked out of the pharmacy that I just took off running for my car (I was already dressed to go for a run) so that I could get off that campus a quick as possible and could start my run.

Run at Greenbelt Park. I thought I would try to redeem myself after last week's embarrassing run where I ended up lost in the park. I faired better this time, but still managed to run down the wrong trail twice, but realized my mistakes quickly. Since I was still pretty peeved from my encounter at the pharmacy it felt great to run off the anger.

I expected that today's run would be a struggle since I beat myself up so badly at the Flying Pig, but an initial 20min of stiffness, my leg muscles warmed up and I kept a pretty decent pace, especially since the last 3 miles of the run had several challenging hills to ascend. After the ultralong at the Pig no hill can seem all that bad. I was also very pleased that I felt very strong cardiovascularly during the entire run. Even though my legs felt ever step I took up each hill, I didn't feel particularly winded at the top. Still, I believe a hill workout is looming in my future (I'm thinking Thursday), it should be a blast!

Sam has inspired me to, once again, incorporate strides into my daily training. My college cross country coach would find this very humorous because I often expressed that they were my least favorite part of our workouts. But now that I am a little older and (just maybe) a little wiser I think there are some real benefits to getting your legs moving quickly every day, as much as they may not want to.

Today I just did 4 strides across a field to introduce my body to the idea that it is going to have to do it after every run. I didn't want to do more than that since I had been so tight at the start of the run, but I will be increasing the number over time (perhaps add 2 a week?)

Flying Pig - U.S. Ultralong at East Fork State Park, OH.

Perhaps it was best that my watch stopped at some point during my race (I really do need to get another watch that doesn't have the start/stop button on the watch face) because I think knowing that I had been out in the woods for nearly 3 hours would have affected my race. Regardless of the legnth of time I spent out in the woods, it was a tough race to get through physically and navigationally. I won't deny that I didn't love flying down the steep hills and then crawling up through mud as I crossed the numerous ravines on my course, but by the end of the race doing so had really taken its toll. Even the trails of ankle deep mud required more energy than I would have liked to have spent as I slogged along them. I took another noteworthy fall on my way to control #15 - as I was running down a spur the dirt just gave out underneath me and I took about a 10ft fall. A log broke my fall which left me with a nasty scrape up my forearm and bruises all up my right leg, but at least I was spared from falling into the stream/river right below it (Sam was not so lucky).

Navigationally I struggled with this map. I don't know how much of it was due to exhaustion, especially as my race dragged on. I'll be interested to see everyone's race on RouteGadget, because I'm not sure whether my overall slowness or poor navigation was the larger contributing factor to my significantly longer time. Legs that were particularly rough for me were 2-3 (the vagueness of the vegitation in the last 4th of that leg gave me a lot of trouble), 8-9 (literally ran right over top the control), and 14-15 (my fall really blew my concentration and enthusiasim).

Despite beating myself up pretty badly today I was still very glad that I ran the race (and even more glad when I finished). Overall, I am very happy with my orienteering at the Flying Pig. There is definet room for improvement, but a weekend like this is always good because it helps me to prioritize certain aspects of my training, but I ran well enough that I am not completely discouraged, yet...
