Orienteering race 1:30:30 [4] 12.4 km (7:18 / km)

HH Lowlander - Felt somewhat rusty after yesterdays' effort, my calves felt tight all night and the entire morning too, so the plan was to just hang in there and see how it would go. Off the start we had "our" king of the mnt. leg as it was the largest climb on the course. We all went straight up with Andrew whether next to me or in front of me, while Greg and Sergey stayed a bit to the right. No one was really pushing and I even alternated between running and fast walking until we hit the trail that went over the top of the Fingerboard Mnt? where Andrew and I stayed on until we cut down to the control. Greg and Sergey contoured around and were right there with us. Andrew then took off to the second (#9) bag along the side of the hill, while I climbed a few contours just to get myself comfortable with the attack point from above. I punched behind Andrew and we ran towards the (#10) when after seeing all the blueberry bushes I decided to run up the trail and attack from above. Andrew hit the bag first as I checked the rock that was just to the north of it. Greg showed up right after I punched. I then took off and began to climb right away as I wanted to get to the ridge of cliffs before (#11) as my attack point, as others stayed below and were contouring along the hill. This is the last time I saw them as I punched the bag alone with no one in sight.
Things were going pretty smoothly for me until I made ~1min error at #16 where I hit a cluster of large rocks just to the left of the one I needed. Went over the top of the hill to #17 as I once again I felt that over-the-top approach was the safest for me.
By the time I got the map exchange, I got somewhat hot, so I took my underarmor shirt off and headed to the Silver Mine map. Had a pretty clean run over that section. I climbed along the green section on the way to #20 and then cut down along the spur. Took a leftish all-around route to the #21 and ran up the trail to the #25 going around the big marshy and rocky re-entrant. Then Paul met me at the #26 and said that I was done, so we walked back to the parking lot.
Felt pretty good at the end, despite not drinking and eating my GU. Looking at splits it seems that I was moving pretty good too, but it is not totally fair to be comparing to the guys who ran twice as much as I did.

Orienteering 32:56 [5] 4.7 km (7:00 / km) +110m 6:16 / km

WOC'93 Re-run. I really wanted to have a decent run and given the settings and atmosphere I got really pumped up while waiting for Peter's countdown at the start triangle. Got off to a fast start nailed the first three controls but slowed down around #4 before the rock just to the north of the bag where I caught up to Sam and saw Clem cutting towards the control. Stayed behind him to #5 and then pushed really hard to #6 and #7. Lost my head after crossing the stream on the way to #8 (didn't check my compass) and was surprised to see stone walls that I did not expect. Took me a while to figure out where I was and ended up losing ~3.5 min there. At this point I got really mad at myself and started pushing again. Lost another 20 sec on #10 as I stayed too high. Kind of missed the road crossing somewhat as I ran on top of the cliff as opposed to running at its food, but crossed the road in correct spot after jumping off the cliff. Caught up to Clem once again at #13 and we finished together (slightly behind) after a little hesitation at the last control.
Figured that I lost ~4.5min out there with one really huge mistake at #8. Cracking 29min would've been really sweet, as I am not sure I will ever get another chance at this course, plus it wouldn't be as fair anymore since I have a very good memory of places that I've ran at already.
