Orienteering 37:30 [5] 6.0 km (6:15 / km) +185m 5:25 / km

K, Nadezhda, and I formed a team for the DVOA-VP relays. Mass start for everyone, and team with lower total gets the win. We took off in the direction that Vadim said to us we would go. In about 300m Eddie is ahead and the rest of us trying to keep up. I tried to be cute and stay on the edge of the grassy field and ended up overrunning the bag. Once in the woods Eddie runs past me and I carefully watch him jump to the road just to realize that he already is heading towards second control. I run back and punch with a seemingly large crowd who cut across the field following Eddie's tracks.

The second bag is uphill and I gain some distance and spot Wyatt ahead of me and then catch Eddie's shirt streaking along the ridge's edge towards the bag. Eddie then jumps to the paved road followed by Wyatt and I simply follow their route. These two are pushing hard and I merely gain a few meters on Wyatt. We all turn to the clearing and Eddie sprints across grassy field, I follow Wyatt and stay behind him on the dirt road. Eddie disappears into the woods at the corner of the field shortly followed by Wyatt. I take my bearing and start pushing through woods towards #3. I lost sight of Wyatt and then realize that I am too high. So I turn left and decent the slop and see the control.

Next control was a pure road run and once out of the woods I spot both of them about 130m ahead of me. I begin a mad dash, fold my map, and start sprinting as if it was 400m race. After clearing the bridge I see them again and have clearly gained a lot of ground. Then I get even closer on another trail run on the way to #5 and finally caught up to Wyatt on the trail going to #6 with Eddie still ahead about 15m or so. At the trails' turn Eddie jumps into the woods, then Wyatt, followed by me. We all run in the same general direction, crossing a marshy stream expecting to hit the next stream any time now. The second stream never materialized, and we all lose our heads. Eddie disappears somewhere high, Wyatt making a U-turn, and I trying to figure out where the hell are we at. Started moving towards the same direction as Wyatt, I see him spotting a bag and quickly try to get there. Wyatt yells that it is #8 and not 6, but I still punch as my mind is too slow to register such info. We then set out towards #6 and Eddie pops out of nowhere around the bag.

These two take off towards the next bag which is in the same greenish area with a lot of rocks in between, and I trying to hold my bearing to not let the same embarrassment happen again. I see them punching the bag and turning towards #8, which Wyatt and I have already visited. I close the gap and stay behind them to another shot leg to #9. We bomb out to the road towards 10, Eddie ahead, Wyatt about 10m behind and me another 10m behind Wyatt. Eddie takes a dirt road towards the parking lot while Wyatt stays lower. I closed the gap on Eddie while we run across the parking lot, and we hit the trail where I began sprinting up on muddy thing. We jump into the woods, find some rocks, and I realize that it is still too early. I ran ahead and spot the bag before Wyatt and Eddie do.

I glanced at the map to see where 11 was and decided to go straight through green aiming for the trail in a re-entrant. No sign of neither of them. I quickly realized that they must've taken the trail. I cursed at myself in a few spots where I was hopelessly fighting with the thick veg and finally managed to get down to the trail. I get to the bag, put my SI in and it doesn't beep. Aha, I thought. it toot another second to beep, thus activating the unit. I can't be first, just no way after the fight with that green. So I set off on the curvy trail towards #12.

I get there and immediately get confused by the stone wall that is partly shown as stony ground. After a few seconds, I realized where I am at, turn my head to the right and see both Wyatt and Eddie heading my directions. I punch the bag and slowly began running away as if still looking for the control. Then I see Wyatt spotting the bag, so I took off. I get down to a trail and decide against cutting through the green once again, even though it looks much shorter. I rev up my speed and am really pushing on the muddy trail going all the way around on the left. I glance at my watch and see that my HR is 195, but am really liking the speed. Just to not let it be forgotten, my butt tells me that it is not happy with such stress but my focus is on the trail and on other two guys. I get to #13 from behind, making it kind of a dog leg towards #14, and don't really see anyone. Nice! I crash back to the field and begin sprinting to 14. Climb up turn around, and still see no one. Then I spike the last control and roll out to the field with finish control in sight. I punch, look around still no one. Then, about in a minute, I see Wyatt's shirt in the woods around #15 and Eddie close behind. And thus how the race ended.

Really fun race after all. It kind of felt just like a real relay with head to head battle at full speed. Note to myself, don't fold the map while trying to catch up, #6 was really just silly. Eddie claimed that he couldn't see anything and needed contacts. Not sure what happened to Wyatt as he rarely misses stuff. I with my map still in the pants just couldn't come to the rescue at that particular moment.

John T., who ran all three legs, ended up winning the race, but we still did good!

Orienteering 1:04:30 [3] 6.0 km (10:45 / km) +180m 9:21 / km

DVOA - Delmont (new map). Felt really out of alignment and rusty. Spent a lot of time walking through rocky and green stuff. #7/8 turned out to be fun controls for me. Started feeling a bit smoother towards the end.

Orienteering 40:00 [3] 3.5 km (11:26 / km)

Went out to pick up some controls. At one point rain was so hard that it really felt like I was moving through tropics. Trails turned into streams, and the only stream that I had to cross to get a bag on the other bank turned into good river. Poor boyscouts, the filed where their tents stood, turned literally into marsh with many streams flowing around the tents. What day.

Running 54:00 [3] 8.0 km (6:45 / km)

K and I ran around on trails at Rutgers. Clay pretty much everywhere. Managed to slip off a small knoll and pulled my left hammy in the process, hopefully nothing serious, though it is very tender now.

Running 45:00 [3] 7.0 km (6:26 / km) +230m 5:31 / km

Running around Caldwells/Little Falls with K. There is a really sweet hill there, but K didn't let me take on it :(

Running 1:05:00 [3] 9.0 km (7:13 / km) +230m 6:24 / km

Running around the Lewis Morris with K and Greg. We did manage to run off the map, which didn't have trails on it due to lack of black ink in the printer, but we relocated using one of the maps posted on the park stand. This followed by BBQ and tossing the football around on the grass.
