Orienteering race (US Champs Day 2) 1:08:00 [4] *** 7.4 km (9:11 / km)
ahr:160 max:180

Today was a bit better. At least no huge errors like #1 on Saturday. Still was a bit hesitant coming into the circle, not being able to see the feature exactly. And I totally misread the reentrant coming into the second to last control. But most of teh time I knew right where the control was, and it's just so nice when that happens! Lost most of my time I think on the longish leg inthe middle...got caught up in the green and it carried me too far left, but was able to relocate off of some really vague features in there.
Overall felt that my legs were fairly tired from Day 1 and the 3 hour super tour of DC that afternoon which gave me an annoying blister on my toe.
The woods were much more enjoyable today and I was able to read the map very well, ... which is always nice!

Orienteering race (US Champs Day 1) 1:29:00 [4] 9.2 km (9:40 / km)

I felt like I had no pressure on me today, although I was super nervous in the morning because I knew I wasn't prepared for this race and that everyone was going to kick my butt.
I neglected to figure out that we were getting control codes at teh start so I dutifully tore out the Red X (I never took any biology/genetics classes) codes that morning and affixed them to my arm holder. When I made my way to the start i finially figured it out that these were NOT my course codes, so I ripped them off, but then when I recieved the actual codes, I was not prepared and as I was punching the start box, I was still fumbling trying to get the stupid piece of paper in the holder... stupid me.
So number 1 was horrendous, although certainly not as bad as it could have been. I got stuck in the green nastyness, attempting to find the reentrant and ditch too early. Finally headed back up the hill to the "ridge" (very vague) and found the little knoll/berm that was mapped, then relocated and went off of that and found the CP. Phew!
The rest of the course wasn't too bad, legs felt good and I was navigating and reading the map quite well, despite how rusty I thought I'd be. It felt so good to bomb through the woods, even considering how green and briar-y it was! I definitely had some iffy route choices, like the long leg that I decided to go straight through to...probably should have taken the road around, but I like woods running SO much more than road running...
Then after the bridge (radio control) I took the road around there and probably losta few minutes. oops.
But overall, navigating went pretty well and I didn't feel nearly as out of shape as I thought I would! (My tapering schedule must have worked!!!) ;o)

Running 31:30 [3]
ahr:160 max:184

Loki and I went for a night road run, paved and gravel. I think I actually ran on my own for less than 1/8th of a mile though. Loki's need to "go go go" apparently overwhelms the uncomfortableness of the gentle leader rubbing on his snout as he pulls. (Despite any "Heel" command I give!)
Had to stop and get off the road a few times to avoid the speeding traffic on the back roads, of course I didn't have anything reflective or ligthed on other than the headlamp, so noone could see us. Saw a beautiful shooting star though!
