Backbone trail between Old Topanga and STUNT.
Picked route based on best chance for smoke-free air, close to home.
LOVE THIS SECTION. Steep, switchbacks, soft dusty trail interspersed with
sharp rock/techy. I know I've done it before, but I don't remember it. It was winter 07/07 when Cyril and I ran and/or rode all of the backbone back and forth for a few months getting ready for Baja Travesia.
From the top/saddle, clear views down towards Malibu, smoke wasn't bad.
Felt like I could go all day, but didn't bring any water or cals. Pace was slow, but HR was high much of the time with the steep climbing bits. 1700+ feet in 3.8 miles isn't anything crazy but it did remind me a bit of Mt Si. Hot, but shaded in the tunnel of trees up the singletrack 90% of this is running through a tunnel of SHRUBBERY. Views into the canyon, steep rock walls. awesome. Real mountain run style.
Can't wait to go longer and connect to the next section Stunt to Piuma. I've been on it recently, Sandstone/TriPeaks over the winter, but I have never run Old Topanga to Piuma and back. The fire zone starts just west of that so it will be a while.
Running back down was a blast in the Hokas, forgot how steep the climb was...
Wanted to run extra at the end down at Old Topanga but decided to keep it at 1hr20 today. baby steps.
