Orienteering 1:40:00 [3]

Day 2 at Surebridge. Same plan as yesterday. Told myself not to be too overconfident, run too fast and become sloppy.

C1 and C2 were fine but then C3-C7 looked like a real challenge. On top of that thoughts of results, speed, other runners, etc. kept drifting into my head and I was feeling a little anxious. On the way to C6 I brought myself to a walk to help re-focus. Made a 2-3 min error at 8 when I went too far on the trail, climbed the wrong ridge, and then had to beat back. Almost made a big mistake near the swamps on the way to C9 as my efforts to make back time led to a rush and wrong decision. I caught it after 50m, came back, and got back on track.

Just before the big climb to C13 I saw Jonathan Campbell behind me not yet to the creek, which means I've lost almost 4 min. I got myself up the hill and resolved that I needed to stop being so tentative and take a more aggressive (direct) route. The rest of the course I did decently well although I was quite tired.

Every time we've gone to Harriman it is hot. I would have benefited by carrying my own refreshments.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the weekend and had my best Harriman races. I didn't let my legs get ahead of my head. I sure wish I could run here more often and work on pushing my speed up.

Event: HVO A-Meet

Orienteering 15:00 [3]

Unofficial "model" event on the north part of Sebago map. We each spent 30 min walking and jogging just to re-familiarize ourselves with Harriman. Very helpful I think. I could go to the start line a little less nervous.

Orienteering 1:55:00 [3]

WU, 6 strides, race, CD.

After all the fast running terrain of late, I was very concerned about being able to switch back to technical terrain. This on top of the fact that it would be not just any terrain, but Harriman Surebridge. I've spent a good bit of time and effort mentally rehearsing and visualizing the type of nav I needed to do.

Very deliberate and discipline O. I took time to slow down and even pause to make sure I understood the map and terrain and not just charge forward. I had some small errors but nothing big and for that I am really happy. And thank goodness for 1:10k.

I was very happy to prove to myself that with care I could navigate on this map. The decent placing was just a side bonus.
