orienteering 8:11 [3]

Forgot to start my watch right away - this is the beginning part.

Lost a couple of minutes at 9 when I didn't read the map properly to see there was a cliff and a boulder and when I got to the feature - unfortunately on the wrong side or I would have seen the flag - looking for just a boulder it seemed too large to be what I wanted so I hunted around a bit looking for another boulder. Eventually convinced I was in the right spot went and looked closer and saw the streamer and then the flag. Then took a very conservative route using trails to 10 and then again to 12.

Wonderful woods though and I had a great time and very happy I made the drive up there.

Picking up more flags from the Rootstock race. Once more I did not have a proper adventure racing mindset. Doing fine until a little after mile 5. The control (which I never got) was in the saddle between the mile 6 and mile 7 marker. But that whole area was enclosed with a 10 or 12 foot high wire fence. There was a gate with a lovely looking road going where I wanted to go but the gate had a chain around the opening so I assumed it was locked and that the control wasn't in there. So I searched around the edge of the fence looking for another way in. But the fenced area was huge and I could not find another way in. Finally gave up and headed over to pick up a control to the SE (which I went right to but didn't see and hunted up and down the trail a bit before deciding I was definitely at the correct stream/trail junction and it had to be somewhere and then saw it. I swear I must have been two feet from it initially and just didn't see it. On the way back from that decided to give the saddle control one more shot and the line NE from the 8 mile marker shows where that side of the fence was. Realized I was one reentrant two far to the east and followed the fence around to where I had been before and gave up. Texted Abby who I think said it was inside the fencing (the texts were a little garbled). Makes no sense to me but maybe the gate was open during the race. The rest of the controls were fine.

Another beautiful day in some beautiful woods. Would be fun to hike around there with an accurate trail map. Was surprised to cross the Loyalsock Trail a couple times when I wasn't expecting it.

6 hours was tough. Not sure I can do a 24 hour rogaine. Will have to really think about that some.
