orienteering 1:31:33 [3]

What a funny day. I completely botched the first control on what was a really excellent Brown course - and I mean really messed it up and I was pretty close all along just couldn't get myself in the right frame of mind to focus and figure it out until I bailed to the road, took a trail and then still flailed around for a bit. Twenty minutes later I finally started orienteering reasonably well and the rest of the course was fine - not perfect but pretty good. The long trails and road legs back to the finish were no fun but I get why they had to be there and I didn't think it took away from an otherwise really great course. Normally I would have been really disappointed and bummed out but I was just so thrilled with how good the course was and what a great day it was and how hard the cadets try that it was just a wonderful day,

Stuck to my plan to just walk everything and not take a chance of messing up my knees.

Drove up in the morning and the drive was easy so had plenty of time to sort out some paperwork issues with the cadets. It's possible that the long drive is why I had trouble concentrating on the first control but I hate to make excuses.

Had an excellent evening with Roger and Valerie and the hotel was really nice. So was just in a really good mood all day.

Green course at Hawk Mountain. Hiked the whole thing but kept up a decent pace. Wore my puffy jacket since I didn't think I'd be moving fast enough to stay warm and that was a good choice. My gloves and buff came off relatively quickly but only unzipped the jacket a little bit and had the hood up for a good bit. Too cold for me.

No real errors although I took somewhat safe routes.

Knee quite sore afterwards especially picking up controls. But it was fine by the evening.
