orienteering 1:48:53 [3] *** 7.4 mi (14:43 / mi) +330m 12:55 / mi

Red course at King's Gap. Not a very good outing. Start and realize there are no numbers by the controls on my map and initially head towards the last control. Get that sorted out and decide not to go back for a new map. Get to my first control and the code isn't right. Stand there for a bit trying to figure out what possible platform I could be on if I wasn't on the one I thought I was on only to decide I was in the right place and the code must be wrong. Take what I consider a pretty good route on a very long leg (about 2km) and things are going fine. I'm a little surprised at how fast I'm moving though as things seem to be coming up way sooner than I expect but I'm navigating by features and not pace so I don't think too much about it. Nail #2, head for #3 and decide I need to be a little careful since it's a platform down 14 contours on a bland hillside. Suddenly realize this little section of rock came up way too fast and finally realize the map is 1:10 not 1:15 (duh). But meanwhile have lost track of my pace and manage to pass the control a little to the right. Manage to relocate reasonably fast. Figure, okay, now it's all making sense lets keep moving, and am heading into #4 knowing exactly where I am only to end up in blueberry and can't see a platform anywhere. Relocate off a cliff a few contours up the hillside only to come back to exactly where I was. Finally see Sam Listwack who points to a mass of blueberry and says "in there" and have to be nearly on top of the flag (6 inches off the ground) to even see the outline of the platform. Not in a good mood at this point. Slog through the rest of the course cleanly but have lost most of my drive to run and climbing up 12 contours to control #6 and then back down the same 12 to #7 doesn't improve my mood. Finish and find out that my map was drawn incorrectly with the wrong platform circled for control #1. It was about 200m away, up the hillside about 3 contours from the correct platform and was on other courses so had an epunch at least. But it made the long 2km leg have a completely different set of route choice options so comparing splits is meaningless.. So a very unsatisfying run.

And then Valerie and I couldn't get the network to work between the two DVOA laptops which we were trying to test for the A event in two weeks. Bleah.

But it was a beautiful day to be out in the woods - windy but not real cold while you were moving. And crashing through blueberry for close to two hours had to be good preparation for Batona!

running 1:01:07 [3]

TNT - track workout w/ Clem and Eric

Warmup shuffle over to the track and first lap (plus pit stop)
7:38
8 laps at a comfortable, easy pace (plus another pit stop!!)
2:32, 2:31, 2:34, 2:32, 2:32, 2:27, 2:24, 4:55
5 laps picking it up a bit and pushing (hard but not all out) on the final straightaway
2:21, 2:19, 2:19, 2:18, 2:20
4 laps progressing from really easy to very hard
2:46, 2:32, 2:18, 1:59
Cool down jogging on the grass in the infield and a little stretching
9:48

Pretty happy with the workout. Kind of made it up as I went along - going from "oh, I'll just jog around for the hour that Clem wants to stay" to "I should really work a little on some speed" to "how can I make this a useful workout" and then coming up with a couple of ideas that I then did.
