The distance is a guess - I just ran for a while in the woods, on some deer trails through eye high grass, on some of the small rocky trails on the sides of the valley and purposefully threw in a bunch of hills. I just tried to keep an even tempo and know that I did one 1/2 mile stretch in 5 mins along a flat section.
